I'm just about to buy a new machine but wanted your ideas on if it was worth paying that little bit extra to get a Dx10 gfx card now or wait and get a decent DX9 card.

if it was me, i'd rather wait till the new cards come out.. or when then games featuring DX10 come out.
Then again you can get a cheapish (sub 200) DX10 card for the price of a DX9 card
Yeah, I saw some of the cheap Dx10 cards but I wanted to judge if it was better to get a better Dx9 card or a cheap Dx10 card.
Its DX level generaly doesnt matter in relation too how fast it is in previous DX versions.
What exactly is your reason for looking at a DX9 card over a 10?

Looking to spend a max of £200 on a gfx card. I won't be playing a massive amount of games but want to make sure that the card can handle anything I through at it in a year's time.
I've heard really good things about the Connect3D X1950XT - £154
also it would be nice to know what screen resolution you play at.. cos' IMO it would be a waste to buy a high end card if your playing at below 1280x960 (i think) when the cards won't show there true potential.
Then again it does have the advantage of being more future proof so it will last you quite a long while.
Got a 20' widescreen Dell monitor. I currently run it in 1680 * 1050.

This is very pertinent for me too, I have exactly the same issue. I'm just about to start buying the bits and pieces for a new rig...
I was going to wait for ATI's DX10 card to come out before deciding, but who knows when that will be? When it does, I'm sure it will bring prices down.
I hadn't realised there were DX10 cards below 200 quid. As its a new rig (the first in 4 years!) I want to start out with a good card, but I don't want to pay stupid amounts of money. I reckon 200 quid is a good amount, but I'd be willing to pay a little more if it bought me some longevity - I'd want the card to last at least 18 months though...
Better to buy one of the more expensive Dx10 cards then or better still wait until ATI release a new range.
Anyone know when ATI are coming out with their DX10 cards? I read it had been delayed..
The 8800GTS 320mb is the card to get for sub £200. It blows the socks off any other card in that price range..
If you can manage an extra £60, then you can go for an 8800GTS 640mb, which really takes you to the near top of GPU technology out there at the moment.
for £350.. you can get the 8800GTX 768mb .. which has no competition yet.. but that is a lot of cash...
Yeah I was looking at what Scan had to get a rough idea of price...given that I'm building a PC from scratch it would be nice to get a decent graphics card to last a good while, so stretching that extra 60 quid is probably worth it get the RAM.
Depends on what you have now TBH. If your current card can play your games at med/low detail without slowing down, then wait. Otherwise you have a choice between the Cheaper X1950XT thats DX9 only or the 8800 GTS 320MB that still has teething problems, however is DX10 compatible and slightly faster in most DX9 Games.Quote:
