    New card

    Hello,

I have a 7800GTX on a p4 3ghz prescott system. Im beginning to get annoyed at the performance of my pc. I am thinking about getting a new card.

I require dual dvi support, dx10 support & future possibility to play hd content (when i get a nice widescreen lcd)...

    Any recommendations? (cheapest first please)

Well lots of problems first. A P4 3Ghz is gonna be a major bottleneck for anything worth upgrading to, from your card.

Also whats your PSU? 400W? what brand etc?

i wouldnt change the graphics card on your machine right yet. I would go for a C2D new mobo ram and psu. 7800gtx will still run dx9 games ok and as smokey says anything higher than that wud be bottlenecked like hell by the cpu

Ahh my psu is some ****e job 450watt me thinks.
So do you think getting a new mobo+cpu maybe psu, would remove the need to upgrade the gfx card just yet then?

not changing the psu might lead to some dissapointment... (ie your system wont work properly)
what kind of ram do u have as i am guessing a move 2 c2d wud force u into faster DDR2 ram

Well a crappy PSU, rules out the chance of just a GPU upgrade.

Id get a cheap Conroe and overclock it. 7800GTX should still be ok at 1280.

only problem being the cheapest i can see you do it for is about £360 (cpu ram mobo & psu) but if you where going to upgrade your graphics card the above would be pretty necissary anyway. Unless you upgraded to a 7950 or x1950 xt but tbh i dont see the point when a 8800gts is only a little more.

Edit: i think the best thing for you is maybe waiting to see what the new dx10 cards (the 8600GT sounds about what your after) have to offer, should only be a few months now

Core 2 Duo OC'd and Corsair HX 620 PSU would be a very nice addition.

Guys, this is really opening my eyes. Thankyou!

I was thinking of getting E6600 cpu?? Yeah I know i need to upgrade the core of my system first, seems wise. I play mainly counterstrike-source, but I would play other games if the performance was better.

I have dual 19" dell tft's, so im not gaming over 1280 yet. I think the 7800gtx still has some life in it yet and I can put off upgrading to a dx10 card till atleast end summer time?

So i need e6600, mobo, ram, psu. please help me find a nice cheap combo.

Good choice. If you wanted to keep the price down then i would go for the e4300 or the e6300 and overclock it although the e6600 is an excelent CPU

    motherboard wise

These are the ones i would recomend

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=437659

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=434330

But this would keep costs down

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=560358

For power supply i would go for corsair/seasonic or tagen. If your planning on putting a 8800GTX or something like that in there at some point i would strongly advise going to something 600w +

Save 20quid+ and get the 520W, it's still plenty.
