    Dell E228WFP or 2007WFP?

    Hey people,

It's time to get a new monitor. I'd like to get a Dell and i was looking at these two, they are both about the same price but a few of the features are different. The 2007 has more connections, and probably a better quality panel, whilst the E228 is 2" larger and a bit cheaper. Which would you go for? Is there a real-world difference between the TN panel of the E228 and the S-IPS panel of the 2007? Also, does 22" mean more can fit on the screen, or is everything just a bit larger as the resolutions are exactly the same?

    Thanks for your help, Tim

20 and 22 inch widescreen monitors use exactly the same resolution 1680*1050 so you just get more screen on the 22". S-IPS gives you 16.7 million true colours over the TN panels 16.2 (i think im right there) and therefore better quality images.

I own a 2007wfp and i am very pleased with it, its rated at 16ms but i would say in real terms its more like 6ms, there is absolutely no ghosting whatsoever. The screen is sharp and clear, no backlight bleed at all and early versions suffered from gradient banding but that has now been fixed (mine is revision A04), when i bought mine dell had a sale on and it had 20% off, cost me £265inc vat and shipping.

I also recommend the 2007wfp. I've had mine for about 8 months with a 2nd 17" LCD and I'll never go back to single view if I can help it.

22" at the same resolution does mean more desktop space... sort of. In the same way as 17" and 19" 1280x1024 panels, you get a larger screen but icons and any other "fixed pixel #" objects will appear larger in proportion. Personally I would go for the higher quality panel and wider input selection, much more useful if you ever want to hook up a console etc.

Unless you have lots of desk space, I would also steer clear of larger (24"+) models. They're bloody huge and take massive hardware to run games at native resolutions.

Definitely the 2007WFP, especially since the extra 2 inches don't give you any resolution increase.

Is that definitely correct - I know some TN panels have 16.2million colours, but do all of them? Or can you get TN panels with genuine 16.7million colours (as opposed to dithering etc.)?

Yes you can, but they're quite few and far between.

A good explaination of how different types of LCD panels work can be found at the above link

But it doesn't really answer his question, other than to say that any 8 bit LCD (regardless of technology) doesn't quite match the colour range of '8 bit' analogue displays

Just saw a thread that had the E228WFP at a bargain price, did a bit more reading on it again and it seems that it is rubbish. The fact that it is cheaper than the Ultrasharp 20" reveals a lot about the quality, it would seem.
