    8600gts

I did a quick google product search on the 8600GTS and i spotted these

    http://www.ginger6.com/xpertvision-2...e-p-17448.html
    http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/cust...productid=3740

    £124ish delivered for me

But lowest on web do it again

    http://www.lowestonweb.com/products/...9-AC8B47B72686

    £119 delivered

EDIT: are the coolers on these things just sped up coolers from the 7 series + any idea if older coolers like HR-03 or vf900 fit and work?

they are supposed to be quite busy coolers and make a fair bit of whine.

The lowest on the web one is what I would go for (i put it in the bargains last week) as it's just about cheap enough to justify it rather than spending the extra on an 8800.

I still wouldn't get one just yet though. Hang on for the ATi's..at the least it may force an nvidia price drop (they can get much higher )

I got my 8800GTS for £180, and I think it was well worth it. Aren't ATI's best cards currently more expensive than the 8800GTS and are approximately equal or lower in performance than the 8800GTS?

sorry mike i havent been keeping up to date with the bargains section should have back chekced a bit further

im personally not thinking of getting one as i already have an 8800 . when i get round to (and get the cash for) a media centre pc i might bung a heatsink 8600gt if it drops in price and turns out better than ATIs offering.

Im pretty sure the 1950xt beats the 8600GT and is roughly the same as an 8600GTS

i really hope ati do this however i cant see it happening, if it performs better it will probably be more expensive

its the x1950 pro that roughly beats the 8600gts (while still being cheaper in most cases..)

the x1950xt and xtx are much better and much more expensive than the 8600 series.. not a good deal at the moment unless you find some crazy deal online!

That's kool buscuit..Was quite tired when i wrote that..didn't mean that to sound like it does lol.

What kind of things would you do with the media pc? We're building one for our house at uni next year and probably just going to use Integrated gfx. Do you plan on gaming with it?

Ooooooh the plans i have! If you dont mind im going to go into detail bout me media centre plans

im going to build a projector using a guide i found on toms hardware.

    Part 1 (http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20041113/index.html)

    Part 2 (http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20041201/index.html)

    (other useful related links)
    http://www.audiovisualizers.com/madlab/lcd_proj.htm
    http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/forum...php?forumid=20

But i want to use a 17" lcd and im not sure it will fit until i get the OHP. My dads trying to get one from where he works

For the actual media centre pc i plan to build an athlon x2 system in uATX factor with the intention of upgrading it to quadcore and making it my primary rig. Was hoping to put a decent graphics card in there so that.

    1. can play emulated classics like mario along with slightly more challenging emulators like N64

    2. could use the computer in a lan party as its more portable

    3. Can have support for Blu-ray/HD-dvd

    4. will still be able to play fairly modern games like max payne and micro-machines etc

Then all i need to do is get a subwoofer and a centre speaker and i got a serious system

Sorry i went a bit i just love summer projects

If you're going to upgrade it to become your main pc you might want to go Intel.. They are getting much cheaper now..There was one on ebuyer for around £50 the other day although i'm not sure it's been released yet. The other components are much the same price now.

The GT and GTS are more than capable for doing that sort of gaming..hopefully your lan parties only consist of CS:S though lol.

You've got much bigger plans for yours than we have for ours..

Ours will just be media and double as some NAS so we can back up to it and if any of our pc's let go it'll be a spare.

It's only going to be around £250 hopefully lol

If you could find a x1950xt for cheaper than the 8600gts then it would indeed blow it away.. but I suspect you can only find the x1950pro, which is still a bit faster in some situations, but lacks dx10 if you're going to be using that.

im not planning n buying now, im thinking end of summer by which time DX10 will hopefully have settled in a bit and the prices may have dropped. Even if 8600s can be easily out performed i would much rather have the full dx10 vista support.

I would recomend going intel to someone else but TBH i have been AMD all my life and i just cant bare to switch. Im just waiting around for barcelona/agena (bye bye savings)

I guess what companants i use will heavily depend on what happens over the summer. You know how it is though, always dreaming
