Question 8800GTS - A few questions before I make my purchase

Looking at getting a 8800GTS for around £200

    Comparing these 2:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Compa...691&CPID=18737

Only differance I can see is that the 320MB is slightly faster - 580/1800Mhz vs the 640MB's 500/1600Mhz?
    Why I don't know... Questions:

Q1 - Bearing in mind I will be using a max gaming rez of 1280x1024 on a single screen (see sig) will the 320MB faster Mhz version be a better buy for my FPS's.

Q2 - My M/Board (see sig) is ATI crossfire ready, as I will be using a single Nvidia 8800 will this have any bearing on my performance?

    Cheers guys,

I went for the 320MB and it storms from any game I;ve thrown at it. A higher clocked 320MB will be faster at 1280x1024 than a slower 640mb.

You're paying about £30 over the odds for the XFX 320mb though. If you really want a pre-overclocked one get this http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=545080 for £199. You can save a tenner more if you don't get an overclocked one too. I bought that exact card and it's a stonker overclocks even further with little problem. Mines currently pushing 660/2020.

That's not a bad suggestion chuck, looks good in reviews etc..

I guess the fact that they handpick GPUs makes it a better overclocker, your 660/2020 is awsome - is that with additional cooling?

I can't wait to build my system it's gonna rock!

depends on your resolution really as the extra ram is only used at 1440x900+ resolutions. Don't buy a factory overclocked just overclock it yourself, it is very easy and gives a nice performance boost like overclocking a cpu.

Get the 320mb version if you have a 19" screen and the 640mb if you have anything bigger

Well it's a tough choice.. basically there are a lot of 8800 cards around the £200 mark, see this:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Compa...732&CPID=19692

they are all pretty similar spec-wise....

but which one would you go for? I'm tempted just to pick the fastest GPU/memory...

    Votes plz?

Stock cooler, but I have a 250mm side panel fan blowing the back of the card which makes a huge difference on the 8800GTS I found. When I installed it my idle temps dropped from 76c to 54.

The only bit that puts me off is "Awaiting ETA from Manufacturer" Which means either A) you're not going to see it in the near future or B) it'll appear Tuesday but wont be at that price. End of the day their all made in them same factory by the same machines so I wouldn't stress too much.

I thought when you 'pre-ordered' that would be the price you pay, are you saying they can change the price from that stated?

Legally they could, you'd have to ask Scan directly to be sure though. Also you could be waiting a while.

Bit more expensive, but not a bad deal for an overclocked 8800. You really cant go far wrong.

I'd go for the in stock EVGA card on Scan, enjoy the free delivery and overclock it myself... oh wait, I did.

I need saturday delivery, or at least 1 definate day during the week, so will be expensive anyway.
Surely if I get the Gainward I can o/c it further (if I wanted to) anyway?

Yeah I reckon you could clock it further quite easily. Scan will do the free delivery any day you specify (I like mine to come Friday for an excuse to lengthen the weekend ). Saturday delivery is extortionate though. I think it was £30-something last time I used City link for it.
