    AMD + ATI = better?

Question out of curiosity, Do you think there will be any significant bonus in using an AMD cpu with ATI graphics card, or using Nvidia with C2D? or the other conbinations?

I dont necissarily mean C2D vs AM2 i just mean in a genral way. For example an AMD which performed to near enough the same speed as a Intel.

I should think that would depend on the northbridge chip, nVidia still have a strong presence on AMD boards and desperately trying to break into the Intel platforms with their 680i chips, they've still a bit to go though.

It would be interesting to see a benchmark matrix for the different permutations of gpu/platform/chipsets.

If there's any difference at all (and I'm yet to see a suggestion there is) then you're talking a couple of frames max.

It should be the least of your considerations when thinking up a build.

This was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to know when I was speccing my new system but I was more interested in the performance compatibility of mobo chipset to GPU. Luckily THG decided to answer this burning question around the same time as I was looking for answers

Nice find Will101, trust toms hardware to do something so zany yet useful. Looks like P965 is the performance king on Intel compared to nVidia and ATi's chipsets, none too supprising either.

That's a very one dimensional view OilSheikh...

Alternatively it would depend on the intended usage and price point you were referring to, but thanks for your opinion

    It's also wrong

The OP was not talking about specific components, but whether there was an inherant advantage in using same brand parts. The answer is of course, no there's not. The speed of the components in question are the only consideration. There is no inherent advantage to using Intel with AMD/NVidia chips, nor is there a disadvantage

This might be a bit off-topic. I never liked AMD , their chips have always been expensive than the similar speed Intel chip.

You're kidding right? The P4 was an overpriced piece of crap.

To confirm, based on brand alone, there is no advantage / disadvantage to using AMD/ATI over Intel/Nvidia, or any other combination. Its based purely on the specific parts that are being partnered.

OilSheikh - I think you may be getting confused and basing your comments purely on the clockspeed of the CPUs. The earlier P4's were marketed on their clock speed ie 3GHz etc., whereas the AMD Athlon XP / 64's were / are marketed on their equivalent perormance. They were much more efficient chips and didn't need to be clocked as high to get a similar performance. Note Intel learned their lesson, and with later P4's and Core-2 chips just assign a series number. There's no real comparison at the mo though, Core-2's win hands down.

P4's were pretty abysmal. When you think of the resources Intel has, they churned them out for a long, long time.

Im not sure if thats a wind-up post or if its genuinely your opinion. Either way, its wrong.

The only thing that concerns me about the AMD/ATI merger is the possibility of them splintering off into their own, new standards in an effort to gain performance.

Remember the days when you could fit different brand CPU's on the same motherboard?

I am pretty sure that at one stage nVidia were saying that using a geforce graphics card with a nforce board would give better performance as the drivers were designed to work together, though this may have been in the nForce 2 era
