Importing a monitor, worth it, 24" lcd

I really want to grab a new 24" screen for the higher resolution, currently got a 20" screen which is decent but i still want to go larger.

thing is, uk prices, and pretty much EU aswell seem to be an entire rip off.

for instance, Dell uk 2407 is £540ish i think today down from a suppoed £669, i know you can get them on ebay for around £425ish with 3 year warranty and often dead pixel checked and rev a04 aswell. but on the US dell site they are down at around £330 ish after conversion AND including 17.5% vat. so the difference of £200 on the dell sites is supposedly down to differing import duties and vat getting screens into UK as opposed to the US. £200 extra on a screen that is £330 over there is NOT down to import costs.

there seems to be suggestions that samsung and other companies sell the same panels with uk/us part numbers for radically different prices. the new samsung 24" TN panel is £380ish at ocuk, and around £320 after conversion and vat on newegg. the samsung 244T is around £400 in the states and around £700-800 here. the US already have a NEC 24" panel which is £400, our 20" NEC screen is what, £300-350 with the upcoming 24" screen predicted at around £600.

none of the prices are simply down to import duties. why are we getting ripped off so badly, how are samsung and other people getting away with it? another example was sony had some bluray player on their OWN online store in the states for $1000 and in the uk for £950 or so.

anyway, can you import screens easily, power wise do most models have internal psu's that can use either 240/120v? i've heard a few people have imported screens saving a lot of cash but i don't know if they had to buy power adaptors or anything.

if you can import certain models that will work on any uk power, are their any good stores for buying from the US. i know of a few but haven't seen great prices or good shipping costs for them, i know a bunch that do watercooling supplies but not monitors.

or any incredibly good deals in the UK?

PS, i'm not just an average "uk is a ripoff" shouting twit either, cpu's and memory have a fairly good price parity with the US and have done for a while, graphics cards on and off are fairly comparable to us prices as are LOTS of other things. but monitors seem to be a different case altogether, check newegg, directron.com, the prices compared to the same models here are often 70-90% more expensive in the UK and thats beyond import duties which tend to range from 5-20% for various different things, there are some extremes, and some particular products the UK sometimes does have massive import duties. i wouldn't be so peeved off if for instance import duties on lcd's were 20% here and 10% in the states, but that should account for a 10% increase in end cost, its an utter joke that many screens are double the price here.

You'll be charged 14% Duty due to the fact that it has DVI and Component interface.

I did that 3 years ago and I was charged over 50% of the original price of the monitor.

My 2001FP have a universal voltage PSU, you just need a USA adapter for the plug.

You might as well buy from Ebay (UK)

If you really want to compare, the 30" Dell is a bit more than $1000 there sometimes, but they're £1100 here.

    try www.pcbuyit.co.uk

they sometimes have offers - last weekend they had 3007wfp for £760 all in.

im waiting for one of their price drops before i go for a 2707wfp.

i wouldnt buy from overseas as you dont get the warranty, and when you are paying that much money you want them to replace your monitor when it goes wrong, rather than saying they cant.

Ebay is your best bet. I got my Dell 2407 on there sent voer form the US. Cost me £380 for the monitor. Lucky for me the guy sent it marked as a gift and I dodged the tax.

I dont think its worth importing. Much easier to find some on ebay - which might even come with a warranty.

I personally bought mine from Dell - I dont want to spend that much money and not be able to send it back if there was a dead pixel or if some fault developed later.

that would be my main gripe this screen from dell NEW with is £340ish after adding vat from the stats, a refurb screen here is £60 more, its a joke. i really want to find out all the official costs, import duties, vat and find out why the same screen is almost half the price in the states. i know that we seem to have some utterly retarded import duties, things like the if it has a dvi port import tax is increased. can someone tell me why a monitor with a dvi port should cost more to import than a screen with d-sub? but i'm fairly sure import costs aren't all of it, after duties and shipping i simply think that samsung and many other companies have different prices for selling the panels in europe, and the differences aren't small.

    http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsP...yType=document

according to that monitors that don't have other video imports which i assume means composite and the like have a 14% duty fee and normal vat, but monitors with only computer inputs, which should be classed as dvi/d-sub don't have any import tax, just VAT. which would mean if you could find a good US deal it should be just amount in US dollars converted, add 17.5% for VAT and shipping and if it works out cheaper you should be good.

the problem being the dell has composite input so jacks up the price another 14% which is a shame, but the samsung 245B shouldn't have import duty. i'm gonna have a look around and maybe shoot off and e-mail to dell, see if they'll ship over here, maybe phone dell in the UK and say, look how much i can get it for from the states, do me a deal you mofo's. gonna e-mail HMRC's aswell and ask if theres any hidden fee's and stuff. its just a joke that i can buy a probo at cheapest dell 2407 for £450ish brand new, £400 seems to be refurbed, and people in the US are getting them for less than £260 after they pay their tax on it separately

Definately ring up dell to get a good deal, recently I bought a 2707wfp which was going for ~£982. I haggled them down to £729 inc VAT and delivery. If the salesman doest reduce the price for you ring up and try get someone different. They get a big commision on the monitors so they really do try and sell them and will try and accomodate deals.
You might even want to be sneaky and pit one salesman against another to get the price even lower.

Why bother with the 24" at your quoted 450 when u can have a 27" @ £480. Inc delivery and Dell warranty.
    http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZericbunny

Dont bother with imports, by the time you factor in delivery ins etc it may well be cheaper but you wont save that much.

A friend of mine runs a computer business and was importing from the states of the 10 monitors he imported 2 were broken from carriage and 2 had dead pixels. It took a long while to get that one sorted.

Volume selling in the states is one reason the other is european suppliers get away with it.
It took years to persuade the car industry that the British public were. Why should it be any different for the computer parts industry?
