    8800GTX cooling

I'm kinda annoyed with my new GTX spewing out molten lava through those internal vents and I was wondering if anybody's tried covering them up? That ought to ensure all the hot air is expelled from the case rather than into it, but will it cause the GPU to overheat? It seems to me that having it all expelled outside the cease would be far better than the current way, seeing as the air going into the case is far, far hotter than what escapes at the back of the case.

    Anybody tried?

nope but my slot fan arrived today, 1 plastic chinese tub and a pair of scissors later, a few inches of double sided foam tape and i have a ghetto mod to be proud of.
it also took card temps down as well as the mobo as its assisting the fan on the card.

I was thinking about putting one of the slot coolers in mine but I can't remember where I put it

Sounds like a good idea to block the vents and let it push the hot air outside the case which it should be doing, plus it'll be quieter than adding another fan and look neater

That's what I was thinking, as I can't for the life of me see why those vents are there at all. It's not as if the fan is pushing too much air for all of it to exit at the rear, or at least I seriously doubt it. In any case I've no room for a slot cooler, so that's a non-option here.

others have taped them over, but u need to crank the fan to get the air all the way out, its not very good at stock speeds. you may see a rise in temps by just taping them.

just raising the fan to 75% should be enough, try rivatuner 2.01, check out the nvidia forum on www.guru3d.com, theres a 8800 cooling thread, and download/support for rivatuner.

Idle it's around 65C according to Probe, without adjusting the fan speed. I've not done any further testing yet, as the system is still too new - just done installing games, not had time to play them yet. :-) I'm not concerned about the GPU temp att all, just with improving the case temp if possible.

My Gainward 8800GTX also spews out 'molten lava' . I also used one of those PCI slot fan units, which is right over the evil vents in question, and I am not joking, the PCI fan is outputting far more of the heat than the GPU fan is. FAR MORE. Ah well it works, anyway. My card Idles at 56-57 Celsius if the window in my room is open, or at 59-62 if closed. The worst it has been under full load (in the NVidia control panel all of my settings are at 16xQ and ultra high quality, and all that rubbish) in Stalker/F.E.A.R/BF2142 is 79-81 degrees Celsius. I can live with that.

yeh i noticed the slot fan spews more heat than the card, im assuming its due to the slot fan running faster and dragging it out b4 it has chance to get out the back of the card.

i have copied this design and also put a 120mm nexus fan underneath the fan intake (superglued some little legs onto the base of the 120mm fan so it can direct it's full cfm at the gfx)

my 8800gts was idling at 63, now it is at 57 (using custom fans speed settings so it is inaudible - 50% fan speed in 2d)

you could also underclock the card whilst in 2d mode, but retain full speeds in 3d mode - use riva tuner and this guide
