I'd like to beef up my rig to make gaming more of a joy when gaming at 1680x1050.
Any thoughts?
Current system:
AMD Opty 144 O/C to 2.5Ghz
G.Skills 2GB running at 250MHz
7800GTX
X-Fi
Dell 2005FPW
Many, many thanks.

id say get a 8800 GTS 320mb will KICK some A**
more than efficient, you can go lower and get a X19XX cards as they will do the trick too and save you some £££
The 7800 GTX is still a reasonable card I would think about upgrading to a c2d system personally you can do it for around £300 and youll see a vast improvement in everything not just gaming.
but if you want to stick to just getting a new gfx card an 320mb 8800 GTS would be the way to go.
Is the 320mb version good enough for 1680x1050?
I guess it must be borderline.

Difficult to find a direct comparison, but I suspect upgrading to a 6600 overclocked to about 3GHz would buy a 35% to 50% improvement in game benchies. That is comparing the X6800 2.93Ghz scores to the 2.4GHz AthlonX2 score (assuming dual core isn't helping game scores much).
I think an 8800GTS would get you at least that improvement in games, but for less money.
Would be nice to know which games you play most, and whether the 7800 is the 256MB or faster clocked 512MB model.
Good point. I have a 7800GTX 256MB card from Dell (actually Foxxconn or Inno3D from what I can remember) which has the double-slot cooler from the 512MB model on it as standard.
In terms of games, I am still playing the stuff from last year as I vowed I wouldn't buy new ones until I had finished the old ones! Specifically:
- Oblivion
- Prey
- F.E.A.R
- Quake 4
- GuildWars
- CS:S
- Sin Episodes
- HL2 engine stuff
- BF2
I think that about covers it?
I currently use a 256mb card (x1950xt) for the same resolution and I've not had a problem running modern games (Oblivion, Test Drive Unlimited, Supreme Commander) on full with some AA and AF.
I would go for the 320 8800GTS personally - certainly enough for 1680 plus AA and AF.
SLI is a pain.
To get some level of future proofing I would go for the 640MB 8800GTS but £80 to SLI looks damned tempting fella, still alot of grunt left in the 7800GTX. Ive been umming and arrrring about moving to a DX10 card from my 7950GT but Vista is still not ready for gaming, or rather Nvidia drivers are still not ready![]()
Yeah, that's what I thought.....£80 to go SLI.
I am also wary about the whole DX10 & Vista thing. The new AMD/ATI card is CAPABLE of blowing nVidia out of the water IMHO it just has driver issues and nobody knows what will happen when DX10 comes out.
I guess I really may just go for £80 SLI option to give me another.....year?, before I have to upgrade to Vista and DX10 where ANOTHER generation of cards are likely to arrive.
8800GTS 640MB - £220
Got one last week, great bargain![]()
