Help!
I need some help from the technically minded – which I’m not. I'm not even sure if this the right place to post, just be gentle with me.:help:
Soon I’ll be buying a new system, a water cooled case with a Core 2 Duo E6600 or 6700 processor, 2gb of Corsair Dominator memory and a Dell 24” monitor.
This will mainly be used for 2D artwork and 3D rendering (with the occasional game as well).
Here’s my question – which nvidia graphic card(s) option below gives the best bang for buck?
2 x 640MB XFX 8800GTS Extreme XXX,
or
1 x 768Mb XFX 8800GTX Extreme XXX
I’ll be grateful for any advice.
Best wishes
Ann

well considering you didnt post any prices, how are we going to work out which is best bang for buck?
go for one card, SLi and Xfire are just not justifaible imo... one high end is always better than two lower cards (afaik)

Definitely the single GTX, will be more than enough. I think you'd be well off with a single GTS 640, even.

Single card. SLI is pants.

So you give us
Option a = 2 x 640MB XFX 8800GTS Extreme XXX,
Option b = 1 x 768Mb XFX 8800GTX Extreme XXX
- 2D artwork = Both are massively overpowered for your needs and will have no effect over say a dirt cheap basic card.
- 3D rendering = Not sure about the 8xxx series, after a quick read up, mixed performance has been reported, in xp 32bit 7900's seem to work better with current drivers, in vista the 8800's work better in directX mode.
However all this does is improve viewport performance, your graphics card does absolutely nothing for final render times, for that you need as much CPU as you can get
- the occasional game as well = this is the only thing that your choise is going to have any major on. 2 x 640mb is massivly overkill and pointless, a 768mb gtx would be better but the question here is do you really need it?
I'd say the best bet is a single 640mb 8800gts which should be enough for any game at high resloutions and put the extra cash into the best CPU you can get. :)
