Overclocking an 8800GTS

What are you guys using to overclock?

I've seen nTune, but to be honest I don't want an app sat in memory chewing 5mb for something which is surely just a registry change. Are there any lightweight apps out there that let you punch in a setting and be done with it?

Ati tool ??, starts up at start up sets the clocks then disappears in less than a few seconds.

Having a go with it at the moment, seems fairly good. Will wait to see if it remembers my overclock after I exit the program though...

Well you've got to save the overclock and use a name for it, then go to settings, start-up then tick all three boxes and change "every time atitool is lauched, load profile" to the name you gave the overclock.

Any problems just ask.

Nice one - one other thing that's a touch confusing...

I'm using the standard nVidia drivers at the moment and ATi Tool is reporting the card to default to 550 core, 792 for the memory.

Now I've got the BFG 8800 GTS OC2, which is supposed to run at 580/1700.

Now - do I have to double the memory value in ATi Tool to give me the correct value since it's DDR2? Or can I safely crank it up to 1700? I ask since I'm wondering why it would default to 792 rather than 1700 and I don't fancy chucking an extra 1000mhz on it!

Yep your right about the memory you double the figure ati tool gives you to get your real speed like mine is 1500 but only shows 750.

And tbh Im not to sure about the core speed I've heard alot about the 8 series not hitting the mark stated by the manufacturers like mine is supposed to be at 500 but came at 513.

And I dont think you would be able to crank it up to 1700 , Im just about stable at 1000mhz in ati tool which in real world speed is 2000mhz.

So if you cranked it up to 1700 in atitool in the real world it would be at 3400mhz.


P.S, I dint know if this will effect you but as long as I have ati tool installed I find I cant log out and log back in on the same acount, I can switch acounts but as soon as I log out and back in I get a red and orange screen so its something to be aware of.

I am using Rivatuner after ATI tool spectacularly killing my machine on 2/3 occasions. I actuall like RivaTuner now I know how to use it, especially as it gives you the option to see the Shaders increase as you put up the Core speed.

I have mine up to about Core 650/ Shaders 1400something / Mem 860 (will post some real numbers when I get home)

This proved a good balance of heat to speed. I dont want it going over 80 degrees under load.

Any higher on the mem and I get no probs in ATI Tool test / 3dMark but in Battlefield 2 I got some funny black textures so I dropped it back down.

I did have to fit a new fan into my case blowing some cold air over the card to get the temps down before I overclocked though as it was originally at 73 idle !

I love EXPERTool, you set it once and its done forever.

btw mine came from the factory (Gainward) at 513mhz/1584mhz, small, but nice bump from defualt.

The BFG card I've got is also overclocked from standard, but only when you use the default drivers and I'm using the latest nVidia ones instead which don't bump up the speed.

ATi Tools took the RAM up to 984 before finding an artifact, but I've turned that down to about 900 since I think that's more than enough for the moment. I only play games in 1280x1024 so that's more than enough grunt.

I've installed Rivatools too, and that's got some extra features which are handy like the fan control, but they're pretty much of a muchness as far as I can see. Will look at that EXPERTool too.

Wouldnt it just BSOD and reset to defualt?

Ati tool wont bsod and reset to stock, at least mine wont, if yuo bootup and find you just get a funny coloured screen or log in and find a funny colour screen you'll have to restart in safe mode and either take the clock down or use the default settings.

I had it happen alot when I was experimenting.

yeah thats what I like about Rivatuner. If you make a mistake you can just take it back down, apply the new clock then reload the device driver.
Ati Tool installs a service and seems to need a reboot to reset properly, and it didnt play nice on my machine with newer drivers.

I know what you mean its a bit of a pain tbh, but once you've found the best clock its fine.

And for me rivatuner decided it didnt want to work.

And im on driver version 158.22 without any problems at all.
