Question about ATI cards

I'm reading the manual for my ATI Radeon 9200 and it says:

YOU MUST DO THIS BEFORE REPLACING YOUR CURRENT GRAPHICS CARD WTIH YOUR NEW ATI CARD

All non-Intel chipset based motherboards require the installation of a custom Virtual GART (AGP) driver. This driver is required by your new ATI card to function properly with your motherboard. An incorrect or missing GART driver can result in memory not being detected or a blank screen after windows loads.

I'm building my system from scratch so I don't have a current video card. Will this become a problem for me? :confused:

It will be a problem if you don't install the said driver if you are using a non Intel platform.

Just install it - should come with the motherboard.

I'm using an AMD Athlon XP 2000+. Shuttle AN35N Ultra mobo.

That's the first I've heard of that one, I've never had a problem with all ATI video cards and I don't have an Intel based system in the place.

Presumably these would be the Via 4-in-1's or the Nvidia motherboard drivers that are required?

If using Win XP as OS, that driver should be loaded automatically anyway, when XP detects the ATI card.

Come to think of it, I've never ever had a problem using Mandrake or Win98 either. Me no understand :confused:

My advice is Dont worry about it, Just build, install windows, install Mobo Drivers, Install GFX Drivers... Thats what I have always done, and there been absolutely no problems thus far.

If there is a problem THEN start worrying, TBH I think you're just getting worried about something that isnt going to affect you at all.

With the Nforce drivers Im sure they install a GART driver.

Just suck it and see.

My Radeon 9600 Pro won't let me do anything with it at all until I install the latest via drivers. Its shows no AGP acceleration at all in the driver screens. After installing the VIA chipset drivers it resolved it straight away.

As soon as you set the machine up and have installed Windows just install the chipset drivers from the CD you get with the board, the screen res will either be in low quality or a basic looking 800x600 so you will be able to see what you are doing. Do a restart after the chipset drivers then install the ATI Catalyst drivers and restart again, thids will give you full AGP support with no worries at all.

I see. This is the first machine that I have built myself. I'm still waiting for my mobo to come in the mail...Should have been here yesterday

Don't worry over it at all, Its really easy. Everything that you put in will only go in certain places on the board itself so theres no real place for error.

If you get stuck give give us a shout here and everyone will help out as much as they can.

If you have done a format on a machine before, installing Windows will be easy enough then just do what has been said in the previous posts about chipset drivers installation 1st. I find installing Direct X 9 2nd before the ATI drivers helps also as sometimes they say its required to install the newer Catalyst drivers (ATI drivers basically). Then after the 2nd restart do the ATI drivers and everything should look really crystal clear and sharp.

Afterwards do soundcard / modem and anything else that is in there and then do any updates from the Windows update site and done !

I already know how to do everything...Good ol' computer engineering class :-)
