Generally i just use the sliders up for quality and make sure that vert synk is always off

There are upsides and downsides to VSYNC and it is simply a matter of personal preference. Enabling it eradicates the horizontal tearing but caps your frame rates and gives a more sluggish feel. With VSYNC OFF you'll always get tearing, it just depends how evident it is to you and also on the game in question. How much VSYNC limits your FPS is almost entirely down to your refresh rate.

In theory your FPS would be equal to your refresh rate but in practice you get around 80% of your refresh rate. WinXP is a big culprit as it likes to use 60Hz refresh in every screen res, and you really don't want to be playing around 50FPS (I won't get into that here). If your display can handle a high refresh (85Hz+) in the res you wish to game in then VSYNC is well worth considering otherwise I'd leave it OFF by default (but allow it ON if a game demands it). Some games look better and everybody has their preferences so give it a try for yourself.

My mate chucks all the quality settings up to max on his. Looks beautiful and he gets great frame rates on all his games.

I personally run all my games at 4XAA and 8XAF with vsync on,

stick all the setting up as high as you can untill you noyice slowdown that bothers you. Or get a 9800pro and wack everything up to full

actually there is a fair diff between a 9700np and a 9800pro. Have you tried them both

Yes there certainly is a diff between a Rad9700 and a Rad9800pro, it's the 9700pro and 9800 that are VERY similar, just T-buffer, enhanced AA+AF and a few other small optimisations really.

Of course I doubt many would actually be able to tell the diff between a 9700 and a 9800pro as nothing comes close to taxing the 9700. Heck if you have a 9500pro/9600pro there's VERY little point upgrading (esp benchmarking to one side) let alone the faster cards.

In terms of benchmarks the best I could find follows. Rem the 9700 is inbetween the 9700pro and the 9500pro.
