Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
This is really winding me up to a point i wanted to get both cards and put them in a fire, i had a Geforce 2MX/MX400 and yesterday baught a Geforce 6200(just as a little upgrade) i was expecting at nice big boost in FPS considering the Geforce 2 is a very old card, but no, on cod2 multiplayer i got around 30-90 fps with the geoforce 2 and 40-110 with the 6200, something cant be right there i get around 40-60 if i play the 6200 on 800x600 im not the best person with the computer's and it dont take a rocket scientist to work out something cant be right there!!
if you could give me some tips, help etc :D il be greatfull
cheer's tom
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
You were expecting a speed boost from a 6200... did you do ANY research? :O_o1:
Both of those cards are similarly pathetic in terms of memory bandwidth, only difference is the 6200 supports DX9. How much did yo upay for the card if you don't mind me asking?
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
Which type of 6200 is it? the letters after the numbers can have a big impact on performance.
Also what's the rest of your specs? as they will effect it as well.
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
Richdog is right. The 6200 cards are mainly 64bit, which means basically there are terrible for gaming. There are some 128bit version aswell, but they are not as common now and aren't much better than their 64bit counterparts.
The fps you are seeing are almost definately accurate. The best thing to do is return the card and invest in something with more grunt.
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
It dont say anything on the box Just a silly little cartoon picture, with nvidia logo pictures all over it with
6200
128MB
DDR2
AGP8X
I overclocked the MHz from 350 to 400 but still even though i was really expecting a diffrence from upgrading from such an old card to something still new, but well ya know and the rest of ma spec's are
P4 2.0 Ghz
512RAM
Apparantly a 450Watt PSU
40GB HD
17" HD SHARPscreen Dell
and the system is a dell(grrr)
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
Yeah, 6200's aren't brilliant at all I'm afraid to say.
Many of them boast a turbocache 'feature,' which in effect just takes system RAM to use as RAM for the card, and reduces the available system-usable memory, and will give slower performance than an identical card with the GPU having its own dedicated RAM.
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
You may well find that although the 6200 would be faster on DX7 graphics, in reality games will see the DX8/9 capabilities and use that.
So: the 6200 giveth, but DX9 taketh away.
As Richdog said, your upgrade is not *that* big. If you wanted a real noticable improvement you needed at least a 6600.
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
Hmm well i suppose it dont really matter, i was only getting it to see what it would do :)
But in a month and a abit, im getting a 7600GT which apparantly is a good little proformer and i assume would work on my system, if not that a 6600GT which i hurd is not to bad it self, but thats from people with much better all round systems than me!

QFT, I found my 6600 a pretty good card - after upgrading from an ATi Radeon 9200SE, which wasn't brilliant either - probably on a part with your GF2.
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
Il Probs got with what the majoirty say, what would be best for me and my system to get the 6600GT or the 7600GT i dont want to get something that will pretty much get the same fps becuase it being bottlenecked(7600GT)
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
Where did you get it from? I suspect that it's a 6200LE and is pritty pants.
It is quite a bit more powerful than a geforce2MX but as Richdog said it's DX9 card so it'll be running the more advanced shaders and effects of DX9, ie it's doing far more than the 2MX was so overall there's no great improvement in performance.
It's a bit late now, but you should of gone for a 7300GT or 7600GS (ether at 256mb)
Also you probably could use a bit system more memory for gameing, another 512mb to bring up too 1gb.
EDIT: go for a 7600GT if you can find or a 7600GS (the 6600GT is ok but I'd go for a 7600GS over it)
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
Remember guys, this is an AGP card. It will be an NV44A, but could have all sorts of memory configs. Chances are it is 64 bit, same as the old MX, but mem clocks should be doubled so twice the performance there. Fill rate should be double. So basically, the card is a 2x performance upgrade.
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
I cant the max the motherbored can take is 512, an old computer xD
Re: Majour FPS Problem From a GEforce 2 to a Geforce 6200
7600GT is worth the slight extra money over the 6600GT

Or more, I have an old 2MX it's olny got 32mb memory.

I'd be very surprised at that. even my old old athlon motherboard could take 1gb.
You may only have 2 memory slots but they will probably go to a 512mb in each at least.

He was talking about the memory interface being 64bit, not 64mb
