Want an 8800GTS but don't 'realy' need one

If this is more a general discussion type of thread Mods please feel free move it...

I'm currently running an X800GTO2 (CPU = X2 4200+) with the bios tweaked and oc'd to x850 (XT ?) speeds or there abouts. Everyone around me is now on an 8800GTS or GTX and to be honest I'm jealous, the trouble is this makes me want to upgrade when I shouldn't be realy.

I can scrape to spending around £90 or so on a new GPU but I know that I'll be disapointed with anything other than an 8800GTS. A GTX would be suicide for my bank balance, I'm happy to go OD for two months or so paying for a GTS. I very much doubt that anything better than an 8800GTS is going to come along by mid October, I know that Nvidia may be bringing out some new GPU's but in all honesty that means early 2008 before they're easy to get/affordable ?.

I know that I'm not going to get amazing results in BF2 and CS: Source (I run 1280x1024), by that I mean there'll be no quantum leap in how they look (just smoother etc.).

Well, shall I bite the bullet and spend around £180 now on an 8800GTS then have to be carefull with my cash for say two months ?. Should I just put up with what I have knowing that it's not that bad ?. Should I break into my parents house and steal my brothers 8800GTX ?

Is this just whine or a plea for someone to justify me spending the money ?

'Steal' is such a harsh word, after all its family, so just borrow it and return in about 2 years time.

What 8800GTS are you planning to get? 640 or 320mb. I would say that the 8800GTS 640MB may be overkill if you are running at 1280*1024, but I might be wrong. Beside that they are both very good cards, and are future proof as they support DX10.

You could wait a little longer and see how things turn out, the 2900Xt is also another good card to consider, you can get it for about £200 on ebay. With all the new driver releases I heard its becoming competitive with the 8800GTS 640mb.

Would be going for the 320, unless it was a card by EVGA fleaBay would be a no no.

Trouble is the wife would kill me even if I had the exact spare cash for it

Whatever happens Scan now can't deliver until Wednesday so I may as well sleep on it. Been spending the past couple of weeks daily scanning all retailers websites floating over the buy it now button, I'll probably just buy one so that I can get it out of my system

Well the cheapest gts going £165
    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=115952

Don't bother with the 640mb version, current tests have shown it's only a couple of fps faster even at high res, the extra money is not worth it.

Not a bad price, however, I think this is the one for me...

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=545079

... with the free delivery and near lifetime warranty I'd take it over the card from Dabs. Seen the big test on 320 and 640 GTS's, very interesting, I currently run 1280x1024 and maybe in a year or two I may move to a 22" screen so even then the 320 GTS will be good enough for me.

I'm going to sit on this until Thursday a.m. just incase Scan come up with a stonking 'today only' deal, if they don't then I'll have my new card delivered on Friday ready for the bank holiday weekend

TBH mate if all you play is CSS & BF2 which work fine with what u got and ur not overly interested by any of the newer games then whats the point? If you wait around till u see a new game u really like then the only difference is the card is gunna be cheaper. I say wait!

For 100 quid you may get X1900 something which should be very good for CS:S an BF2 and no need to spend lots of money.

Re: Want an 8800GTS but don't 'realy' need one

On ebay I have seen the X1950XTX and 7900GTX go for less then £140. These card even though are DX9 would easily handle any game at 1280*1024 at the moment.
