Another 9800se thread :/

Sorry, and as backup I did have a scan through the previous posts to try and find the answer but couldn't. Get the cat'o'ninetails out if you can find it there though :D

I'm obviously tempted by the cheapness + performance + AIW features, and I'd like one guarenteed to unlock, which is done by http://www.radeon-shop.de

But they offer 2 models, of which the only difference seems to be the memory timings, the gold:

has 2.8ns memory at 337.5mhz, while the standard:

http://www.radeon-shop.de/shop/view_artikel.php?id=136

has 3.3ns memory at 337.5mhz. Both give 128mbs of it.

I'm perfectly au fait with what diffence the memory speeds will make, but what difference will I be buying with my extra 60euros if I go for the 2.8ns version?

And finally, my A level German leads me to believe these guys guarentee the unlocking, is that true?

While the MHz is related to the speed, doesn't the 2.8ns and 3.3ns relate to the access time? Obviously the 2.8ns would be faster, but not sure if it's worth an extra €60!

Yes Big AL it does but access time also relates to the Mhz the memory is rated to be able to go to. The lower the access time the faster the Mhz of the memory.

I believe the formula is something like 1/access time is max freq. (remebering its DDR memory)

so from this 1/3.3*10^-9 the max frequency of the memory is 300mhz (giving a total DDR mem speed of maximum of 600mhz)

1/2.8*10^-9 is 357mhz capable of a ddr of just over 700mhz.

The fact that the 9800 se AIW mods quite well from reading the reviews it doesn't clock as well - i think you'd be better using the standard memory speed, I don't think the extra investment is worth it.

P.S feel free to correct me if i've got my maths wrong, It has been resurrected from memory and not googled.

Nothing wrong with the formula you've used.

Frquency (f) = 1 / T - f & T have an inverse relationship.

Back on topic.

I've tested 3 * 9800SE AIW and all have softmoded, but the ocing capacity of the memory tends to vary. They all do 9800p speeds, but on 2 of them don't like anything over 345MHz where as the other will do 365Mhz, but hey its still good value for money if you get one to softmod.

What memory has that card got on it then?. Better than 2.8ns if its gone to 365mhz no?.

How can it do those speeds then (puzzled) or its specification 3.3ns and it can do more but how much more is random, i.e 365mhz is the memory running at 2.7ns effectively.

If the RAm is rated to 2.8ns, shouldnt that mean it'll be able to clock to 2.8ns speeds. IE 357mhz?

Strongly tempted to try one of these myself...especially as my 9700np's value has plumeted in the last couple of weeks because of these!

Don't fancy getting stuck with a non-moddable tho.

By the look of the cards, they do have that distinctive L-shaped memory and power connector signifying that they can be modded with the disabled 4 pipe-lines re-enabled. However, the "Gold" version with the 2.8ns RAM will get you true 9800Pro speeds (380/680), whereas the 3.3ns version can only get you up to 380/600. You can try overclocking the 3.3ns version up to 680, but it's already at it's theoretical limit.

Well according to their FAQ, you are in fact correct. The 'enhanced' label is something that they put on themselves (not the card manufacturers), to differentiate the products that THEY sell. If the card in question (both of them in this case), had 'enhance' as part of their description, then that means they've actually tested the card and found the softmod to work, with no artifiacts.
