7600GT Fan making whining noise :(

    Hello guys.

My 7600GT fan is making a weird whining noise, as if my fan is bouncing around instead of spinning around.. I used to be able fix it just by simply touching the fan.

However when I touch the fan now to try and 'fix' it the noise doesn't go away... I'm really worried that my 7600GT is going to die. It's only a few months old.

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks so much

Yep, your fan is dying. The fact that you used to be able to get rid of the vibration by gently pushing the fan into a new position confirms that. If it's still under guarantee, get a replacement.

I've had a similar problem with a low-profile GPU fan, it lasted about a year after the noise started, but eventually the fan just fell off.

Its usually caused y the bearings getting dust in them. Fairly common im afraid on smaller fans (chipset fans are the worst!).

If its out of warranty, its easy enough to replace. If you're willing to spend a few quid, the Zalman VF700/VF900 come highly rated

Thanks for the replys guys... The noise has stopped this morning, but I'm definatly going to reaplce the fan. However, if it easy enough to replace or is it very techincal lol? I'm rubbish with fitting hardware.

I've been looking at my local hardware shop and I've seen this one 'Arctic Cooling Accelero S2 VGA Cooler'. It says it supports a 7600 which is all good.

However, in the picture I don't see a fan, just a silver grill lol, will I need to buy a fan to go with the heatsync?

    Thanks in advanced.

Re: 7600GT Fan making whining noise :(

The Accelero S2 is a passive cooler, using a much larger heatsink than found in fan-based designs. It's also apparently quite easy to install. The downside is that you will lose the slot next to your graphics card because of the size. But it's silent and there's no fan to break down .

Re: 7600GT Fan making whining noise :(

No there is no fan on that one, it's passive, great big heat sink feed from some heat pipes.

You might have problems if there's no space under the graphics card.

They sell seperate fans for it
    http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=139

You could fit a fan to it, if you have space under the card, a standard 80mm case fan (or 92mm I think) get 4 rubber washers to seperate the card from the heatsink and feed some bag ties through the holes and washers then around the heatsink to secure it.

But a nice Zalman as agent sugested would be better, as it's less fiddley and they work well.

And if it's still in warranty RMA is probably the best bet. although that would mean some time without a card

No chance of RMAing it as I've lost the reciept !

This is going to be harder than I thought.

So if I bought Arctic Cooling Accelero S2 VGA Cooler and fitted it, it WOULD need a fan?

It depends on your case, as the passive heatsink will be using the airflow in your case to move the hot air. If you have a lot of other cards which would obstruct airflow in that part of the case then a fan might be needed, but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.

Here's a review of the heatsink.

    Thanks for that mate.

I don't have anything plugged into the slots that are near my graphics card so air flow should be ok... I only have the standard packard bell case though, I don't think this will be a problem.

Should I take my chances and get the heatsink without a fan?

I hope it isn't too tricky to fit either !

    Cheers.

I wouldn't worry too much. Passive heatsinks work fine on cards like the 7600 which don't put out masses of heat. Some versions of the card come with a passive heatsink as standard.

Re: 7600GT Fan making whining noise :(

Well you should be fine without, if you have problems then as I said it should be very easy (if a little Heath Robinson) to fit an 80mm case fan to it if you need the additional cooling/airflow.

Cheers guys, going to get the heatsync tommorow.

I've removed the old heatsync off my 7600GT, I took it out aswell and put my old 6600GT in for the time being.

It would be so simple if they sold the stock 7600GT fan !

I'm guessing you stick spacers over the correct holes on the shroud and then screw it down from the other side. You just need to work out which of the holes lines up properly

Bleh that's too complicated for me, I'm just a noob.

Oh well it was only 15 quid... Gotta go back to my crappy 6600GT.

Btw, if anyone knows where I can buy a 7600GT LEADTEK fan please let me know.

    Cheers

Arctic Cooling Accelero AC-S2 is the one you wanted for the 7600
    Sorry about that.

Got a pic of what the original heat sink & fan looked like?
the only ones I can find are

or was it the old design?

The Zalman ZF700 or ZF900 would probably be better and eaiser to install
http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/...t.asp?code=013 They also have simple flash animations showing how to install them

EDIT: Might be a problem replaceing the fan, however you might be able to remove it and fix a small fan onto the top of the heat sink instead.
