    Suggest a decent 24" monitor?

I know absolutely zero about monitors and would like to get a 24"er for my brother who is visually impaired. Someone has suggested one made by a company called Belinea, but would a better known brand such as Dell not be better quality? Can pay up to about £600..... Thanks for any help

Re: Suggest a decent 24" monitor?

It would pay to either get a 22" or 27" monitor if he is visually impared.

24" has a very higher resolution for the size of screen. I find it quite difficult to read off of them at times and i have 20/20 vision.

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displ...roductId=28117

this is an ex demo of a very nice dell screen.

    Theres also ebay for them.

22" will set you back around £200 - £250 depending on inputs you may want (tv and consoles as well as pc)

Re: Suggest a decent 24" monitor?

Thanks for the info. The monitor you linked looks beautiful, but tbh 90 day warranty scares me when £500 is involved. It wasn't really the resolution of the 24" I was thinking of, merely the screen size, he always has to set the resolution lower than standard anyway (apart from when gaming).

The Dell would do him very well indeed.
I would also if possible out of the change left over put him on Vista. The support for visually impaired has really improved. Icon sizes can be set according to the impaireds needs.

Voice recognition is pretty good as well. I can sit and not have to type. Takes a few sessions for it to work out your accent tone etc but works well.

Re: Suggest a decent 24" monitor?

Might be an idea to look for a 1440x1050 20.1" widescreen as that's only slightly higher res than a 17"-19" widescreen (1440x900) but a good size larger.

novatech have one for £140 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?TFT-NOV201 don't ask me what it's like though.

    EDIT: sorry ignore
it's non widescreen 1400x1050 and looks suspiously like a Video7 which are pritty pants in my experience.

scan have a glassfronted Asus one for £233 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=644794
For wide screen I'd agree with 22" or 27"+ or look around on ebay or simular for an older 22" which has a lower resolution.

Other alternative is a LCD TV as they can be got in larger sizes at smaller resolutions.
Or a Projector, however projectors need regular mataince and replacement lamps are expansive giveing them a high running cost.

Do you not think I should be worried about only 90 day warranty on that Dell though, rather than the standard 3 years? Do you happen to know what kind of price range monitor repairs would be in if something did go wrong, because £400 is one heck of a saving, but if the average repair bill is £300 for those big suckers.....

He has Vista and has switched back to XP as he hates it

Which voice recognition software do you have, Dragon Naturally Speaking? Got that myself and it is good........ think he is sorted for all that stuff though as he's off to Uni in september and the council are funding loads of Software, etc. Thanks for the suggestions though, very much appreciated.

Could I not just get a 24" though and set the resolution lower though, so there is a bigger screen area than say a 22"er? The money is really not an issue provided there is decent warranty (i.e. I won't have to buy another for the next 3 years!) Going to try linking a PC up to some of my friends LCD TVs and see what they are like, as I know a few people who have hdmi inputs on them. Cheers for the help

Re: Suggest a decent 24" monitor?

The jump from 22" to 24" is quite something.

I had a 22" Viewsonic hooked to my laptop up until a few weeks ago. Ordered a 2407 Dell from Scan when it was on TodayOnly for a shade over £400. It is fantastic. Full 3 year warrantee is well worth the extra over the 90 malarky some places offer. Even if it is just for piece of mind. Personally i would expect to get more than 3 years of use out of a £400 monitor.

Setting the resolution lower than the native 1920x1200 is possible, but might be worse for your brother as everything will be quite soft looking with the scaling. Although probably worth a try. I would say playing around with the accessability settings would probably be better in the long run. As said before, Vista has much better accessability options than XP. It would be worth trying to have a play around with it to see what really benefits your brother.

Re: Suggest a decent 24" monitor?

I wouldn't recommend changing the res on LCD panels they tend to look awful afterwards. Its fine on CRT's they look perfect whatever the res but LCD's dont cope well.

If you can get down to a comet local to you you'll be able to see nice HP 20" and 22" screens. That should give you an idea of resolutions. The 20" is how you can expect a 24" to look in use.

As has been said. Vista has so good features for the visually impared so deffinatly would help with any screen you buy.

Just an idea but have you considered an LCD TV? you could get a very nice one in your budget and although the resolution is quite low (limited desktop space compared to 20"+ monitors) they are just as clear and would be very easy for him to use as ever appears very large on the screen. And he gets a nice tv out of it..does picture in picture for watching dvds/freeview too

I use one of these with an old computer I have.

Sorry my bad: what I was refering to was a brand new Dell 24 as they are currently £411 from EBuyer

    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/128136/rb/0

That obviously comes with a full Dell warranty.

Are the Dells any better than this though:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=608174

What's the difference? Have looked at the specs and all I can see is that the Samsung has a slightly faster response time and better contrast ratio..... is this something to do with the panels used, and what difference does this make in real-world terms?

The contrast ratio of the samsung is the same as the dell physically at 1000:1 then the rest is made up dynamically...which instead of at a single moment is the highest constrast over a time. read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_ratio . I think you'll find the samsung and dell are quite simliar with lots of people backing each. The dell comes with a 3 or 4 year next day warranty which is a good thing...im not sure what the samsung offers

Re: Suggest a decent 24" monitor?

Without repeating myself, as i've answered this question in another thread.

go for the BenQ FP241WZ 24" TFT Monitor, pricey but worth it around £600

Make sure it's the Z model as it's the newer monitor.

you can get 'em cheaper. but beware of the ones that suffer blackouts (as mine does) and also the customer support who take ages to do anything ( as they are with me at the moment).

Dell do a nice one for about £400...

    Cheers,
    Stephen

Do you have the Z model and are still receiving blackout's, then maybe i should think about another make alltogether.

This is the LARGEST THREAD on the BenQ in existance i think, take a peek before you buy.
