New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

Just bought one of these 8800GTS 640mb version after reading through 100s of reviews etc stating how great the fps were in games.
Unfortunately after trying various games the fps jump from my x1900xt is rather negligible. Tried lots of different driver sets (used drivercleaner etc)...nothing overclocked.
3dmark06 shows a jump from 5500 to 8000 which was a good sign but in practise I can hardly tell the difference.
For example playing Oblivion at 1680x1050 fps in towns is pretty low...arriving at the market district showed only 11fps. (according to lots of reports I shouldn't be getting framerates any lower than mid 20s)

Any ideas if any would be appreciated?

    Cheers, Roo

Even when i change graphics card, i will always throw in a format. That eliminates any software issues. Then if its still dissappointing then its most likely hardware. Yours doesnt sound hardware though, going by ur 3dmark jump

If you've got an old spare hard drive you can do a reinstall on that (unplug current drives just incase) that way if it's still no good you're not going to have to spend ages reinstalling all your software or lose any data.

Double reminder unplug all your current hard dirves first to make doubly sure you don't wipe any thing by mistake.

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

    Tricky one.
Is is possible that your expectations are too high, and in fact nothing is wrong?
A jump to an 8800 is great, but a 512MB X1900XT is already a pretty serious card so you may have been spoilt.
Play with a 6600 (non-GT) for a week, then try your 8800GTS again. You'll see an improvement

PS Sorry for the piss-take, but hope you see my point

What is the rest of your spec? Minimum FPS can be more CPU dependant than graphics, depending on the game and resolution.

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

Hi, my spec is underneath my username on the left..except for the video card and a 22inch lcd. (1680x1024)

@MSIC...lol, yes my expectations may have been a little high i agree..but to see such low fps with a card this powerful is annoying to say the least!
Going to scout around for an old hard drive to reinstall xp now.

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

    Is you CPU overclocked?

It may be worth checking CPU-Z and checking your PCI-E bus width. It should be 16x. When i push my fsb past 360, it will drop to 1x, so although I can run the CPU faster, there is a huge drop in GFX performance because of the bus width drop.

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

I always use driver cleaner 3 to get rid of old video card drivers before installing the newer ones. You may have some Ati residue left. As DMc says the PCI-e bus should be set at x16. This might be done manually in the bios. I think my DFI has a load of pins to configure Sli and x16 PCI-e bus.

Yep used drivercleaner and checked my pci-e bus speed via bios and cpu-z too. Thanks for the suggestions again.

If that CPU is at stock the 8800 will be bottlenecked by it. Keep in mind most reviews use CPUs you are unlikely to have, such as Core 2 X6800.

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

The X2s are still good in games, so I seriously doubt the CPU is bottlenecking it, particularly in newer games.

More so that the 8800GTS isn't really much of an upgrade. The shaders performance will be the biggest improvement, explaining 3DMark's massive jump (3DMark has certain tests to really stress the shaders), while in reality it's just not that big a leap all round. It's why I've still got my X1900XT.

I still have my x1900xt too..using it in my other PC at the mo.
@watforddude...lol moaning is a part of posting on forums I'm a little happier now though. ps: I still have my old 2mb s3 virge video card in my DOS machine which I use every day!

update: things have improved since a total reinstall of XP (and stopping the nvidia tray processes etc).
