Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
Hi,
I'm wanting to build a new PC sometime but I've kind of been waiting for nVidia to release their new graphics card (the one that will be more powerful than the 8800 GTX, not the 'mid-range' one). Until today I thought, according to places I had been reading, it would be released mid November... but now there's different information. (November release = less powerful than 8800 gtx)
Does anyone actually think it's worth waiting still? I was hoping for the newer one because of DirectX 10.1 support + then I'd buy a fully PCI-E 2.0 compliant motherboard (not sure what using a PCI-E 2.0 gfx card in a PCI-E 1.1 slot would limit if I wanted to upgrade again down the line but I imagine something would be slower)
I really don't know if I should wait or not... any ideas on the proper release dates?
Thanks!
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
Everything about the G9X GPU's seems to be very hazy, the only info we seem to have is that a new mid-range GPU (G92 ?) is coming out.
Roadmaps seem to indicate that AMD/ATI aren't realy going to be releaseing anything major this year either (just revisions/replacements for mid range products).
I don't know why, I must have seen it somwhere, but I seem to remember that we won't be seeing any new powerfull GPU's from Nvidia until spring 08 ?.
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
Based on NVidia's release cycle (i've worked it out to be about 1 year 3 months), we should be expecting the "9800" type card anytime between the rumoured November and February. Which i think would be Q4 2007?

Thanks for the replies, perhaps I will wait a tiny bit longer.

Don't know how reliable that is though. I read a quote from some high up Nvidia guy who said that they were sticking to their release schedule of the high end part in the autumn, with the mainstream cards the following spring. Will try and find a link.

I'd be surprised if nVidia bothered with a new high end part this autumn - they simply don't need to do it yet. Better for them to hold back until AMD release their new line and counter.
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
Dunno, I think its only supposed to be an upgrade of the current design so they could conceivably do that. After all, was there any real need for 8800 Ultras?
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
With only mid range cards coming out soon nvidia don't really have to launch a high end card right now.
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
We will see when Crysis comes out if they need a new card or not. I don't think any card they have out now is good enough to play direct X10 at full. Crysis will bring the 8800 to its knee's.
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
I cant really see much more than something like an 8850 or an 8900. I doubt we'll see a new gen e.g. 9800 or the like.
Nvidia is already the dominant force, so why bother improving your range and lowering the price of your current, market dominate range. They may as well hold on.
Either way, Im not upgrading my 7900GTO until the next gen cards come out.
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
Would be rather nice if they could bring out a set of fast, reliable, fully working drivers for the 8800's before they start with the next gen products!
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
I thought Nvidia high end products are made on an older process (90nm or something) than the ATI ones. If that is the case, they have very real commercial needs to release new parts regardless of technical reasons.
In the mean time, I will stick with my 7900GT until I stop hearing reports of driver problems.
Re: Any 'reliable' information for nVidias new card?
I'm surprised no-one has pointed out that this discussion has been done to death over on Beyond3D already ;)
In short, there is absolutely no concrete or reliable information information yet. General consensus is that there is little business cause to hold back new high-end kit, but the mid-range market is the most profitable.
Oh, and mounds of unwritten frustration at the total lack of an official line :P

I don't think so.... they may be manufacturing on 90nm die but they have the fastest GPU - untill someone produces a faster/better GPU then they have no competition and don't have a commercial need to produce new parts as they can still ride their current product.

So the fact that a shrink from 90nm to 65nm almost halves the cost of making the silicon but can produce an otherwise identical retail price product isn't a commercial reason?
