best agp card for sub £100

my main system needs something to help it cope with forthcomimg games.

absolute max to spent would be £110. i run the screen at 1280x1024. so onboard memory is not a big concern. it just would need to cope with games until i do a complete overhual in january when i get laid off.

the choices would seam to be a 1950 pro or a 7800 . which one of these would be the best choice ?

Re: best agp card for sub £100

Hi alsenior, if possible mate try and grab an ATI X1950 Pro as it's the best and fastest AGP card there is. They do versions with 256mb and 512mb of onboard memory but I'd go for the 256mb if you're running at 1280x1024. It's way faster than any of my old Nvidia boards (6800GT, 7800GS) but you just need to make sure you have a decent power supply to run it as they utilise 2 molex power connectors. I grabbed a Corsair 520w PSU to power it just to be safe but it's worth trying your existing PSU first to see if it's up to the job. I got the model made by HIS and due to the heatsink it takes up 2 card slots inside the case so that may be worth checking first if you have sufficient space inside. The Saphire version tends to run very hot and has an extremely loud onboard fan that I beleive may have been updated if you can source a brand new revision. Also the other thing I've noticed is that the overall picture quality of the ATI cards is far superior to that of any of my previous Nvidia cards. Hope that helps

£111.57 + postage, even if you could get £10 quid off from you'd be pushing it & it's out of stock.

Powercolor Radeon X1950PRO 256MB £109.22 would be better esp as it's got the good Arctic Cooling Accelero X2, however still going to be past budget with postage.

ebuyer did have some very nice 7900GS for £90 but they seem to have gone now.
However they do have a HIS X1950Pro 256MB IceQ 3Turbo for £104.85 + free postage

Lambda-tek have got a xfx 7900gs 256mb agp for £108.38 but adding postage is going to push you over budget again EDIT: Sorry it's out of stock anyway

Does look like for under £110 + AGP you'll be stuck with a 7600GT or 7800GS or x1650Pro (or that ebuyer x1950pro being the only one I can find under £110)

Please avoid the Sapphire's unless you want to live in a world full of hurt and go with the much better (and quieter) HIS X1950 Pro if you can find one in stock. Trust me in that I speak from experience
