    DVI cable question

    Hi,

I bought a cable to allow me to connect mx xbox 360 to my Dell 30" monitor however I got the wrong connector (DVI-I rather than DVD-D), What I would like to know is can I simply cut the additional 4 pins that make it DVI-I so that it will fit the DVI-D connector on my monitor?

    Best regards,

    Wilksj01

No. as I wanted to play in HD and I was advised that with the VGA cable I wouldn't be able to. Is this not the case?

    Re: DVI cable question

    Honestly don't know for certain.
While those 4 pins are used for analogue, so are some in the "normal" DVI pin area too.
If the screen has a signal to these when it shouldn't, it may cause issues.

Not something I'd recommend either way

But ignoring all that - the 360 has no DVI output?

If you use DVI-I connectivity then it's effectively the same as VGA anyway... Anyhow, the xbox 360 should use high resolutions that the monitor supports.

Whoever told you that needs a smack
In fact, the VGA cable can go up to 1080p without question while a lot of TV's will only accept up to 1080i over component (it depends on the tele )

Unless im missing something here, the only way to use a DVI plug to the TFT is via a HDMI->DVI adaptor on a console with a HDMI output?

Yes that's right. I assume the DVI->HDMI converter somehow does analog conversion, but anyway, DVI-I is an analog signaling protocol, not much better than plain old VGA.

    Re: DVI cable question

Im sure it'll stay digital all the way. HDMI can't even output an analogue signal as far as I know?

But anyway, to the OP: You really need to explain what you are trying to do here
The only digital output on the 360 is HDMI...If you have a machine with it.
The only way of getting this into DVI is by using a cable that has HDMI at one end, and DVI at the other, or a HDMI->DVI converter.

Why not use a VGA or component cable? I honestly doubt you would notice the difference (unless you read What Hi-Fi?)

Yes, HDMI is digital. DVI-I is not however, thus the adopter.

    Re: DVI cable question

I hear you, but im just a bit confused over the "I assume the DVI->HDMI converter somehow does analog conversion" bit mate?
The HDMI port cant output analogue, so its not just a simple case of mapping it to the correct pins on the DVI cable. Only the 'other' port on the 360 does analogue, but using a VGA cable / Component would make more sense from there if possiable.

Not really, if a monitor only supports DVI-I (which is analog only), then simple pin mapping wouldn't work. Which is where my assumption that the DVI->HDMI converter has some kind of DAC, comes from.

I agree, VGA/Comp. would make more sense if the monitor doesn't support DVI-D.

    Re: DVI cable question

ive got my 360 hooked up to my 20 inch widescreen using the vga 360 lead, and it runs at HD res fine, so have no idea why/how a dvi cable is involved!

I'm confused, I thought that DVI-I could transmit in both analog and digital, while DVI-D was digital only and DVI-A was the analog only varient?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI

Ah, you're right actually, there seems to be a lot of customer confusion about Cable types and compatibilities these days, lots of industry buzzwords and little in the way of information.
