    Recommend a graphics Card

    Hi guys

I am after a graphics card for a new computer build for my Dad. It's gotta be less than £50. He doesn't really game much but my sister sometimes uses the computer so it's got to be capable of some basic gaming. DX10 preferred if possible.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

    Very basic!

Scan have some sub £50 graphics cards that are DX10 - there are some HD2600 around £50 and 8400/8500 on the nvidia front. Haven't had any experience of them so don't know if they are any good though.

If you make the order upto 50 quid you do get free postage.

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

I wouldn't worry about the DX10 stuff if you're just paying £50. Better to get a good DX9 card, than a sh;te DX10 card. DX9 isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and any DX10 games aren't going to be worth playing on a DX10 card with DX10 enabled.

Don't be yet another sucker for DX10!

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

Main problem is that many of the good DX9 cards are dissapearing now, even then £50 is pushing it for something worth it.

If you can strech your budget to £60 then ebuyer have got a nice 7600gt
    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106578

    For the cheapest 8 series I'd bother with is a 8600gt, £68
    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/126974
Which is better than the 7600gt but not by much and like I said before don't bother with high res gameing or FSAA

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

Alternatively you might want to consider a 6800GT from Ebay or something. This is nearly on par with 7600GT and should be able to be bought for the 40-50 range. If it's going in a new PC make sure it's a PCI-E version, (not AGP)

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

When buying a graphics card people should bare in mind that DX10 isn't this holy grail that Microsoft say it is, yes it looks very nice and all that, but it doesn’t really offer any thing that new in real world terms.
What it does do however is allow the hardware to show off more of what its already got.
so given the fact that all games at this time a written with DX9 in mind, it is better to get a faster DX9 card than a slower DX10 one.

Can anyone comment on the X1650Pro? It's a cheap card and looks good on tom's hardware vga charts.

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

If your not a heavy gamer, I just got my 8 year old an nVIDIA 8800gt 256Mb card
only £100 from scan it didn't seem to do too well in reviews against the 512 Meg cards but in real world gaming it has been just fine.
seems to run all DX9 games at good quality levels, and DX10 stuff OK without too much AA, just don’t go throwing Crysis at high settings at it though.

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

If I had to recommend DX10 on that budget I would say:

    ATI: HD 3650 512MB GDDR3 £59 or GDDR2 £47

    nVidiea: Palit 8600 GT 512MB £56 or the 256MB version is £47

The nVidea is probably the faster but the ATI's have better media options like audio over HDMI and HD decoding on board.

The alternative in DX9 would be
ATI: X1650pro 256MB £35-£50 or X1650 xt 256MB £58 (the xt is significantly better than the pro)

    nVidea: 7600 GT 256MB £55

    Re: Recommend a graphics Card

I seem to remember that the x1650pro is around the same as the 7600gt

While the 8600gt isn't that great a dx10 card it does stack up ok in dx9, it's one of the cards that has shown a noticable improvement with newer drivers vs the eairly drivers.
It does beat the 7600gt and equal to the 7900gs in some games.
(Where do tohes prices come from webby? the cheapest I've found the Palit 8600 GT 512MB is £76)
found it on ebuyer as Point of View (it's the same company AFAIK) for £63

Also I've not heard of the HD3650 before
