I've read a couple of reviews for the PRO (not very good ones though)
They seem to rave about it. 8800 wins out sometimes, PRO others.
Pick your favourite colour
Personally I'd have the 8800
2900pro
seems like the best £ for £
Its an underclocked 2900xt from the comments I've read. Most users have overclocked the speeds up to or over the 2900xt speeds and ssomeone has even flashed theirs to a 2900xt.
Howwever, as mentioned above both are better than the other at different benches.

Supposedly a new version of the 8800GTS with 110 stream processors instead of the normal 96 is coming out soon.
Also the 8800GT maybe a good performer; the 2900 series itself will be replaced in the next few months also.
whats 8800gt
8800gt will be released around Nov/Dec from my understanding.

New lineup will go something like:
8800 Ultra 768MiB - 128 stream processors, dual slot solution. - Unchanged.
8800 GTX 768MiB - 128 stream processors, dual slot solution. - Unchanged.
8800 GTS 640MiB - 112 stream processors, dual slot solution. - Increased stream processors, same price as current 640MiB GTS?
8800 GT 512MiB & 256MiB - 96 stream processors [i think] (600MHz core/1800MHz memory), single slot solution (65nm). - New product, same price as current 320MiB GTS?
Discontinued:
8800 GTS 320MiB
As to the original question, if you must absolutely buy now, i'd go for the 2900Pro if you're going to overclock, 8800GTS 320MiB if not. If you don't have to buy right now, wait and get a 8800GT 512MiB; or the improved GTS if your wallet can stretch that far.

I'm leaning towards the 2900Pro, slightly cheaper price point without giving up much in the way of performance (if any!). Not to mention it means you can pair it up with an X38 board for Crossfire potential in the future.

Though they don't update very often, they have interesting reviews that compares the card in question with the others in its class with a range of different games, and tell you what the min, max and avg framerates are, and the maximum playable resolution and graphics settings the card is capable of.
When I read the reviews at that site, the 2900 series seemed distinctly underwhelming compared to the 8800gts 640 and Crossfire results were neglible. The 8800 had better performance in a wider spread of games, despite all the driver grumbles. Mind you that was a short while ago, I'm not sure how the Radeon is performing atm.
I've got a 8800gts 320 and it's plenty quick for me, if I had the extra money I'd have opted for the 640.

Hexus have their review of the 2900Pro up now
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=10002
Bang for buck still shows the 320mb GTS is the winner but the PRO isn't far behind.
What also interested me was the temps that the PRO ran, 42 idle is very nice. Does anyone know how noisey they are?
It seems that the nvidia's win out until the resolutions get stupidly high and perhaps with HDR lighting.
To be honest that review would make it harder for me to pick
Tweaktown have a review with some more games tested: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1189/1
The headline for me is that the 2900 pro seems to outperform the 8800gts 320 in pretty much all games, however the nvidia takes less of a hit for AA and AF, which are enabled in all of hexus' benchmarks.
I'd say that for upcoming DX10 games, AA and AF aren't going to be a realistic option with either of these cards. That being the case, the 2900 should provide better framerates.
Woo! AMD is finally back to producing something i might buy!
umm, very. ...<looks for reference>...

we need to start a campaign for bigger vga fans!
If your running vista, only the nVidia 8 series drivers are worth using at the moment from what I've been reading.
