Question Single GeForce 8600 GTS or dual 8600 GT? Best Performance?

I'm building a new system through CyberPower, and I'm trying to decide between two nVidia GeForce 8600 GT 512 MB cards in an SLI configuration, or a single 8600 GTS 512 MB card (leaving the second vid card bay empty). Double 8600 GTS cards are out of my price range right now, so its either one GTS card or two GT cards for only $30 more. Which would yield the better performance?

Also, since this is the monitor forum, what does everyone thing of the ViewSonic Q20WB 20" WSXGA Color TFT Active Matrix LCD Display (1680x1050)? I'm on a bit of a budget, and this thing looked good on NewEgg, but I wanted to see what you folks think.

    Thanks in advance!

I take it this is for gaming then.

    For a 20" monitor you would want a 8800gts either a 320mb or 640mb version.

And as for sli not worth the hassle + exopense, and anything below a 8800 is still beat by the 7 series.

Definitely get the 8800 GTS... it's exactly as the man daza says.

Another thing to note is that a 8600 GT has only 32 stream processors. The 8800 GTS has 96. So the dual 8600GT is going to have - at absolute best - only 2/3 of the performance of the single 8800 GTS, assuming the same clocking.

SLi is best justified when it offers something single cards can't- either a level of performance single cards can't attain, or a level of performance single cards can, but at a lower price with SLi.

The second scenario is much harder to make a case for, usually you're better off with one high end card than two lower end cards.

The 8800GTS would be the best choice, as noted.

Question Re: Single GeForce 8600 GTS or dual 8600 GT? Best Performance?

Thank you for your imput, guys. I intended to put an 880 GTS in here a while after I bought the rig and could afford it. You see, the problem is, the 8800 GTS 320MB throws me over budget by about 90 bucks (for a card that has fewer MBs), and the 8800GTS 640MB is an additional $110 over the 320MB. Waiting to save up for the 8800 GTS 640 MB would mean pushing back getting my new rig an extra four months or so. Hence why I was looking at the 8600 cards (the 512 MB ones). I really don't want ot wait that long for one component; I don't mind upgrading later at an additional cost. What do you guys think?

Edit: Yes, this is a gaming rig, but not meant to be a super-high end rig (yet). For the moment, I'd be happy to be able to run Doom 3 and HL2 at as close to max settings as I can, and run F.E.A.R. and Oblivian decently. My old machine is a P3-M 800MHz with 256 MBs or RAM and a 32MB GeForce 2 Go video card (I've been playing KotOR on *that* for years now). Even an 8600 would be a vast improvement for me. Btw, the processor I'm going with is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.0 GHz, in case anyone was curious or if it makes a difference. Thanks again in advance.

Re: Single GeForce 8600 GTS or dual 8600 GT? Best Performance?

A new version of the 8800GTS 640mb is coming out in the next couple of weeks with 112 stream processors instead of the normal 96!!

Also the 8800GT is to be also introduced to replace the 8800GTS 320mb and hopefully will be cheaper!!

They will be made on a 65nm process so they will also consume less power and run cooler!!

I would definitely wait for the next few weeks to see the reviews of these new GPUs and perhaps the older ones will drop in price too!!

Thanks! I was going to wait to wait a few weeks anyways to get funds together. I'm just hoping I can gather enough together to get some form of the 640MB 8800 GTS. One one criteria is I want at least a 512MB card so I can play Doom 3 the proper way.

If you still can't afford a 8800 series card I'd save yourself a few bucks and simple get a X1950Pro / 7900GS 256Mb, both cheaper and better performance than the 8600GT, can be picked up for pennies and will run the games you mentioned very decently (the games are only DX9 anyway). When you've built your new cash pot consider your options then. Anything below 8800 in number isn't worth considering at the moment.

Dont base your decision on how many megabytes the card has. I have 8800gts 320 and a 22" monitor and I can play anything out at the moment maxed out - most reviews show very little difference. IMO its not worth the extra money - future games may be a little more memory hungry, but Id still rather have the extra cash for an upgrade when the whole card becomes obsolete.

Thanks guys; I'll keep all this in mind, plus watch what the new nVidia releases Cat-The-Fifth mentioned do to the pricing structure and such. I may just hold out for an 8800 GTS or even a GT after all... Thanks everyone, once again. Of course, if anyone has anything else to add, feel free to chime in...

Re: Single GeForce 8600 GTS or dual 8600 GT? Best Performance?

If you're skint maybe think ATI. The price performance of a 2900pro card is really good right now, especially if you flash it to an XT.

But in general, a few quid extra now (or in a month) will pay much in the way of dividends in the long run.

As they say: Less haste, more speed

I'd say wait and see what the coming weeks are like. There are seems to be sme great cards along the way which might bring prices down a little.
You can play Doom3 very well with a 8800gts 320mb card. The higher ram such as 512mb or 640mb will really come into its own when used with large resolutions such as on 20" tfts or gaming with mods/high tertured games such as Oblivion with Texture packs.

I've read the 8800gt due out soon will be a great performer.

Yes, but if the 8800GT is going to be priced competitively then it is worth spending the extra over an 8600GTS.

Also the 8600GTS is not a bad card but is destroyed by a 8800 series card in DX10 and the later will be a better long term card for DX10 gaming.

Also remember that ATI has its 2950 series card coming out too!!

If you are sticking to DX9 a X1950 pro or 7950GT will do the trick nicely!!

Re: Single GeForce 8600 GTS or dual 8600 GT? Best Performance?

The 8800 GT looks quite promising...looks to outperform the 8800GTS from what I read...if the price is the same (or lower) than the GTS, I'll bite.

Sadly, CyperPower no longer offers the 7900 line, but they DO offer the X1950Pro...despite the fact Vista is going on the new rig (with XP Pro for some older games...I hear KotOR doesn't always work in Vista), I don't mind briefly using a DX9 card until I can afford one of the 8800s. And you were right, Cptwhite, that Radeon card is a good $100 bucks (roughly) cheaper than the 8600 GTS. So I'll likely either go for that, or try and get either one of the 8800s (likely the 640 MB one; I do plan on using some of those high-def texture packs for Oblivian! ). Thanks, you guys, you're saving me money in the long run, and that money can go to more games.
