AGP GPU Update on a budget

Ok, so was updating an old pc (media center) with extra RAM the other day, and whilst putting it together again, I accidently jammed the fan on the Graphics card, an ATI X800 XT. I noticed straight away that the pc was massively quieter as soon as I did that. Anyway, I subsequently removed the cable that was stopping the fan spinning and realised that all the noise from this thing was coming from this GPU fan. This has always been a gripe of mine, and I don't know why I didnt pick up on this before, but have now decided to update the graphics card for something silent. Here are my requirements and limitations.

Budget - £50-65! - I will sell the x800 on ebay, should get about 40 - 50 for it, and add another 10 -15 quid to top up.

Form Factor - AGP ONLY - I have an Intel 865GLC Mobo, so I'm stuck with an AGP card, and this machine works fine for its purpose without needing to update any other components.

My questions are, what choices do I have for passively cooled or quiet Graphics cards which are AGP and in that budget? I've noticed the 7600 GS which is for about that money on ebuyer which is passively cooled.
An alternative maybe to buy an arctic cooler for the x800 if i'm better of keeping thatm this can be had anywhere from 10 -15 quid. How does the x800 XT rate against some of the new stuff on the market?

As this is a media center machine, I'd like something that could offload any HD processing if possible.

    Any suggestions?

ok, so maybe the above is a bit convoluted - let me put it this way.

How does the X800 compare against the 7600 GS graphics card? such as this :

The 7600 series cards are a generation ahead of the X800, you'll notice some performance improvements.

Well, graphics cards that will beat or equal an X800 are so cheap, it's hardly worth bothering buying a new cooler when you could just get a silent card.

Thats what i was thinking but what threw me was the fact that on ebay, folk are paying 40 to 50 quid for the X800 second hand, when you can pick up a next gen card new for less! . . . Got me wondering if there was something special about this card!

Anyway, anyone want to suggest the best AGP card that i can pick up for my budget? I would prefer a passively cooled card. Currently looking at the 7600 GS.

    thanks.

Not really, ebay is just full of idiots and scammers.

AGP narrows your options really, but a 7600GS will out perform your current card, and will probably do till you build a new rig.

thanks aidanjt. Agp is a Bummer but i have seen a fair selection of cards. i was also considering a 2400 HD card which is temptinng especially as the machine is a media centre. How does that rate against the 7600?

It won't do gaming (7600 may), but will offload the CPU during movie playback, though. And you can get a passive 2400 (not that you can't get a passive 7600, but the HD2400 won't be even warm).

Re: AGP GPU Update on a budget

I think a passively cooled 2600Pro would do the trick for you if you can find one. Here's the cheapest I can find it on AGP, although you'll want to read some reviews to get a better understanding of how noisy it is

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Re: AGP GPU Update on a budget

I'd sell you my XFX 7800GS 256mb Extreme for 65 quid no bother, perfect working order, I still have the box and cables floating around too. I just upgraded to PCI so I have no use for it, and my 9700 AGP can go in the PC if it ever needs to be used for anything again.

Edit: On second thoughts I just ran right into that, didn't realise you wanted it to be silent.
