    Which 8800gt to buy ?

Currently have a evga 512mb 7950gt and thinking about buying a 8800gt, whats the cooling like on them ? my 7950 cooler is a little noisey when it gets going unlike a 2 slot cooled 8800gts/gtx, are the coolers going to be noisy on the 8800gt's as they are also single slot ?

Also which to buy, evga, bfg, gainwood etc they are all the same price ! ( scan reference )

ill probably go for the evga one, it may not have the best bundle but has 10 year warranty which covers overclocking (i think) and the warranty isn't void if you remove the cooler also heard good things about the service/rma.

Re: Which 8800gt to buy ?

A question about the Scan website... I'm trying to convert the prices to American dollars (I assume I'm correct in thinking its in Pounds so my conversions are correct...tell me if I'm wrong), but what is VAT? It gives two prices, with or without...I'd like to know what it is! lol =)

Personally, I'll likely wait and get the eVGA Overclocked one. But i haven't decided yet.

vat is the Value Added Tax. 17.5%, the money which goes to the government. I know you guys in usa dont pay much of that on pc parts . take the higher value and convert, because that is what you gotta pay.

plus why would you wanna get it here. usa prices are way cheaper...

VAT is value added tax. Currently set at 17.5% (although some items like food are set at zero and some other things are set at 5%)

Re: Which 8800gt to buy ?

I do plan on getting one from a US vendor (either through ym PC maker when I get my new rig built, or through NewEgg); I was just wanting to get an idea of what they were going to cost (I didn't find the card on either site yet). Trying to make sure I put enough in my budget ot get one of these beauties when it comes time.

Re: Which 8800gt to buy ?

well when you convert the prices, subtract about $150 or $100 more off the price, because of rip off prices

Thanks for the hint. My previous conversion was about $318, which is acceptable, but I'm hoping for closer to $250.

Bear in mind that that NewEgg price excludes Sales Tax (currently 7.25% for California, where NewEgg are) and the UK shop price includes VAT. So take that £175 and knock the VAT off to get like for like, giving £148.94.

£149 compared to £130 is looking a lot less like a rip-off ..... unless you want to thank our government for the chunk they take from you every time you buy something, after the substantial chunk they take when you earned the money you needed to buy that something in the first place.

Oh, and most goods you import will have import duty charged as well. So when you (or whoever brings the cards we buy here in) imports, import duty gets added before the VAT. So yes, you pay VAT on the import duty. You pay tax on a tax. Import duty rates vary from, on a few things, 0%, up to 70% or so. Commonly, it's between about 4% and 14%.

So, if there's any ripping off going on, it's largely our wonderful government doing it. Good job they're doing such a wonderful job of spending our money efficiently and achieving such wonderful results in the NHS, schools, etc, isn't it?

Just for reference, someone on a decent £30,000 salary, and with standard allowances and no extra taxable benefits, is paying about 26.6% in PAYE/NI. So you need to earn roughly £239 to have £175 left after PAYE/NI. The PAYE/NI is about £63.57.

But that £175 card includes VAT of £26.06.

So, of the £239 you needed to earn, you'll pay £63.57 + £26.06 (£89.63) in tax.

To put that another way, you need to earn £239 to buy a £149 card.

Out of the £149 the card costs, it has to be designed, the raw costs paid for, the manufacturer, importer, distributor and retailer all have to make their profit margin and the shareholders their dividends.

And none of those figures about the government's take include the import duty they may well be charging, simply because I can't be bothered to look up the relevant rate, so their take is actually likely (unless it's a 0% product) to be higher than that.

Small wonder the civil service has been growing and growing. The treasury needs a lot of extra people to count the money.

    Guess where the ripoff is?
