Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
Im looking at replacing the aging moniter on our familys second pc (8year old 19" crt) and im looking at the options available in the 19" tft market.
It will be used largly for just surfing the web, word processing, msn and that. Maybe the odd bit of gaming, buts its fairly slowish pc anyway.
Ive got a pair syncmasters on my computer at uni (a 940t and a 940n) and they work well, so im temped to but another 940n?
- But it was a while ago i got even the 940n (i had the 940t about a year before that) so maybe there better now? and was also keen to look at offerings from LG and ViewSonic, maybe a Dell?
Samsung SyncMaster 940N : Read reviews and compare prices at Ciao.co.uk
ViewSonic VX912 : Read reviews and compare prices at Ciao.co.uk
LG L1953S : Read reviews and compare prices at Ciao.co.uk
That said, there a silly number of widescreen 19inch er's about and very modest prices. Never seem to get on with that who?
PC World: Cheap SAMSUNG TFT Monitors - SAMSUNG 205 BW Flat Screen TFT Monitor
Does anyone have any maybe more up-to-date information what avalable and any good?
Daniel
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
19" Lucoms Daewoo L950DM is suposed to be ok
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Although Scan have it on the today only sale this weekend for £111.63 (inc vat)
Although that LG L1953S looks very good
One last thing to note, my old 19"crt is actually 17.6" viewable so a 19" tft is larger
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
Yeah that looks ok.
- Not too large a bezal either, which i something i like about the 940's i have.
This screen mesures pritty much bob-on 18" viewable, but the 17tft next door looks tiny compaired to my 19's, so more 19's it is!
Daniel
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
Yes my 17" tft looks a bit small compaired, but then again it doesn't bend the desk like my 19" belinea CRT does
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
The Lucoms Daewoo is a good reduction - I'll order one tomorrow.
It's on-site warranty as well, so that's a strong incentive.
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
Dont forget if you get a 19" widescreen that the vertical height will be less than that of a 19" 4:3, to achieve the same vertical height in widescreen you will need to go upto a 22" Widescreen (well actually 21.5" but but not many of those about :P )
Samsung, Viewsonic and LG all make good monitors and for what you say you need it for I would think almost any monitor will cope. Give us a better idea of yuor budget and we will beable to advice you a bit better. Looking on Scan the are a few widescreen 20" (at 1680*1050) for less than £150 the 22" wides are a bit more. The 19" "squares" come in about the same as the 20" wides. But again it all depends on your budget and available space n the desk!
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
Well as he's said Non-widescreen and it'll only be used for web, word processing, and msn, a wide screen is not really suited for the purpose.
The only way a wide screen would be good is if it was rotated through 90 degrees but then you'd need a stand/bracket to alow you to mount it that way and will need to look at 1680x1050 as a minimum resloution, which is going to push the total price up qiute a bit. (the prices on monitor stands are silly)
So I'd say a 19" non-wide screen is going to be your best bet.
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
19" is best for browsing, as otherwise the lines are too long!
Yes, a 22" on-end would be about the same 'width' but twice the price and a lot of pages aren't that long.

Well its my dad that will be paying...
- He'll spend what he needs to, but proberbly about the £120-£140 mark?
Im glad some other people seam to think a 4:3 is the right thing for the task.
- Ive never been a fan of widescreens, but ive never had one other than this laptop (familys) and they are popular/fashonable.

Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
wide screen = great for DVDs and games (although I still tend to prefur 4:3 on games, does depend on the game though)
Web broseing and office type stuff = 4:3 or the . . . (cannot remember what it's called, it's actual paper proportions, roughtly 3:2)
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
If you're going to be using cleartype, don't get a widescreen and use it in portrait mode - the smoothing relies on the specific orientation of the RGB elements, and it looks a bit odd.
It's really nice to have a widescreen if you're watching video, but for web browsing it's not as great.

I wouldn't say that - my 1680x1050 widescreen screen in my laptop is brilliant for web browsing etc, I even get more space on this than a 17" TFT. However, to get that resolution you need to go to a 20" or a 15.4" in a laptop...
Re: Midrange 19" Moniter (non widescreen?)
Web browsing depends on the site and wether it makes use of the available width, and if you do not like that the you can resize the window to fit or have two windows side by side.
