Hay Guys newbie needs help
Ive just ordered a xfx 7950 gx2 xxx which arrived today but havent been up to spec with these new super cards which need a power supply. Could someone talk me through hooking it up to my pc.
My PC arrives in a couple of days is the card compatable with my new beast? specs:

Motherboard 775 P4M890/ P4M900(5.1 Audio, Ethernet)
Memory 2GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM
Hard Drive 250GB HD(WD, Maxtor or Seagate)
Optical Drive 20x Dual Layer DVD-RW
Video S3 INTEGRATED 3D 256 BIT VGA
Case TOP QUALITY Gaming Case w/ Power Supply! 520w
OS Optional: To Add Windows XP, see Below!
Cheers Karlos.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
Both those boards appear to be pci-e, so yes, the card will be compatible as for hooking it up, just slot it in the pci- e slot and make sure that you plug in the extra 6 pin power cable.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
Nice1 Aez.
It comes with a black six pin which goes into the end of the card and two that go into spare plugs on the psu.
Do i plug both in or just 1?
Im thinking 2 as its a dual card.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
First off check to see if the PSU has the required power lead (it may have depending on how up to date the PSU is) if it does then plug that straight into the card if it doesnt then you will need to use the adapter and yes you will need to plug a 4pin molex into each socket (this would be the case independent of the fact its a duel GPU card).
Hope this helps
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
Just want to check here is this the card you've got?

I don't know of any compattability problems with the P4M900 and the 7950GX2
However the PSU??
Sorry but thoes specs make me suspisious
CPU Intel pentium D DUAL CORE 6.8GHZ(Vista Ready).
there's no such thing as a 6.8ghz Pentium D, it might be a 3.4ghz pentium D which they are doubleing up because it's a dual core cpu but they shouldn't.
Also a new pc with a pentium D is also not a good sign as the pentium D has no been phased out for better cheaper intel chips, most noteably the e2xxx series (formally called the coreduo now the pentium dual core (no D))
Case TOP QUALITY Gaming Case w/ Power Supply! 520w
Something like that also has me worried, most places which sell pc will list the manufactor and model os the case if it's a decent quality case and the same goes for the PSU.
Which sounds to me like it's a cheap case with a cheap psu in it.
If this is true then you are more than likely putting your whole pc at risk putting a fairly power hungery card like the 7950gx2 in it.
More detailed specs would be good
If you don't know them and this came from an online place, then the URL address would also be good.
You're post count is too low to post url's so just replace the . with spaces or simular we'll be able to work it out ;)
If you don't know the full details of the psu but do have the pc then open it up and look at the PSU it should have a sticker on the side that will list the make, model and have a power table.
Tell us the make, model and the numbers
The most important here will be all numbers relateing to the +12v, it will probably have multiple +12v rails, shown as +12v1, +12v2, etc so also look for a combined maximum +12v number.

Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
Looks like it is the pentium D not the pentium dual core although there numbers seem all over the shop
The Pentium D is still a dual core cpu, I'm still running one and they are not that bad, just the newer ones are better & cooler
they don't list any details on the case or PSU probably a cheap job, you'd have to check the numbers on the PSU when you get it, although if you ask for the details of the PSU hopefully they'll tell you.
Also worth asking about case fans, does it come with any? what size? or what size it can mount?
For £250 that's an ok pc in my book, you'll probably need to spend another £45 on a decent PSU though.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
don't buy this machine.
If the guy selling it is is just talking crap about what he's selling, you'll - chances are get a hunk of junk
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
He`s had over 2,000 sales and 99% decent feedback.
Im on a budget and only paid 90 pounds for the 7950 gx2.
So for under 400 ive got a good soild games machine.
Will the spare plugs that come with the psu be maked with a voltage?
Thanks for all the imput.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
What Ikonia said. There's no such thing as a 'Pentium D 6.8Ghz'. It's the old (pre core duo) Pentium, and he's marketting it as 2x3.4Ghz = 6.8Ghz - this is just plain lying. The 7950s gx2s aren't the best cards either. IIRC they're the ones with 2 GPUs on the same board, and performance is dependent on SLi drivers?
I'd personally suggest you return them both, and ask on the forums if someone can spec you a decent rig for the same money....
If you completely ignore my advice, a 520W PSU should be enough for one of those graphics cards, although as he doesn't mention a brand, you may have some issues.
The plugs on the PSU will only fit (easily) into the graphics card, so you should be OK.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
Its a 3.4ghz core duo.
Im gonna stick with it i will let you all know how it runs when i get it should arrive mon or Tues.
So both plugs coming from the 7950 gx2 go into spare molex`s?
Thanks for all the info.

no its not ! and thats the point.
also 2 x 3.4 GZH cores does not = 6.8ghz - this guy is miss-selling products to you - so ask your self what else is he miss-selling to you about the description.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
I don't think the seller knows what it is ?
Quote
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad, Core™2 Extreme, Core™2 Duo, Pentium® D, Pentium® 4, Celeron® D processors, Socket T (LGA775)
Or is that just a generalisation
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
Bloody ebayers. Most sellers are horrible and mis describe their items and most buyers think they're always getting good deals when they are infact buying crap.
But mate, buy a new PSU, the one bundled is likely to be utter poo and won't power your system. There's a 400w FSP PSU from Scan that should be able to do it.
Re: Hay Guys newbie needs help
Actually looking over it I still don't think it's that bad but not great.
A quick price check and build on scan
LN18817 Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2160, S775, 1.8 GHz, 800MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2x 512KB Cache, Retail £47.46
LN19753 Gigabyte GA-P35-S3L, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 1066/667/800 MHz, SATA II, ATX £56.39
LN12200 2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-5400 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12 £33.36
LN19006 Samsung SH-S203B/BEBN 20x DVD±R, 16x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, SATA, Black, OEM inc. Nero £16.61
LN18053 250 Gb Western Digital WD2500AAJS Caviar SE, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 9 ms £40.50
LN15198 Akasa Zen Case - Black Silent Cool Midi-ATX Computing case w/2 silent 12cm fans w/o PSU £28.20
LN19492 450W Corsair VX Series PSU, ATX, PS/2, UK Version, 80 PLUS® certified £45.83
TOTAL £281.28
Now at first glance the CPU looks slower, but at stock speeds is actually around the same performance in games and they will overclock quite well and are far cooler.
SO it depends if you're happy building your self or not.
And I like the 7950gx2, it does still perform very well and for £90 that's not bad at all, I've been keeping my eye on them on ebay and I must of missed that one as they mainly go for around £115-£130
The power numbers for the PSU will be on a sticker on it someware
e.g.
