    Re: AMD 3870 Reviews

Considering the price and availability I think these are the cards to go for!

    Re: AMD 3870 Reviews

i was surprised by the results. I would have thought, from the rumours, that the 3870 would be equal if not better than the 8800gt. oh well rumours!

performance is great for mid-range cards but which to go for?! another good thing is the lower idle power draw for the ati cards. but even then 100+watts! idle! that needs to change seriously, no point in saving a few watts with chipsets and cpu when a graphics card blats all that thought and work away instantly!

I'm torn as the 8800GT pips it in games is more expensive and hard to get hold of, but the 3870 is better for HD content stuff and is cheaper and quieter.

All the reviews I've seen so far has shown the 3870's memory to run at 2.25Ghz effective. So I there is no mistake there.

    More reviews:
    Anandtech.
    Firingsquad

Those two are more neutral compared to the first two reviews posted. Anandtech claims a 15% advantage for the 8800GT. Both basically say that it's fine if you won't pay more for the GT (or can't find one), but they are not competing in the same class.

I do like the comparatively lower power consumption of the 3870. At the end of the day, my PC spend more time idle (GFX wise) than running GFX intensive applications.

Hopefully the retailers will keep to the RRP. However Christmas is around the corner though!

i think the 3870 price will only drop once the GT is back in stock, otherwise i can't see it happening.

I just bought a pair of 3850 and a crossfire (Abit AW9D Max) Motherboard, £240 all in. I'll have to put some benches up when it's all set-up

    Re: AMD 3870 Reviews

I'm torn between getting a 3870 or an 8800GT. I will wait about a month before choosing properly when new drivers come out, but I am leaning towards two 3870s seeing as I can go Crossfire and not SLi.

If you're going to wait another month then consider the new GTS that is going to be released it will be better than 3870 x2 I imagine.

I think you are letting your imagination get the better of you, the new 8800GTS will be around 8800GT performance maybe a tiny bit better. I think 3870x2 will beat it and would at least match a GTX.

You mean you actually found a supplier that has stock (not just claiming)?
