    HD3870 - interesting Crysis numbers!!

Looking at the framerates for the Crysis demo in the Hexus review of the HD3870 it seems that the HD3870 actually beats a factory overclocked 8800GT in 64 bit Vista !!

I noticed that they are using the latest 7.11 beta drivers!! Do any of the other reviews of the HD3870 use these drivers and see the same thing??

Is it even down to the state of Nvidia's 64 bit drivers??

I had my sights set on getting a 8800GT but due to the absolutely decrepit stock levels of this card I do not see it dropping down to below 150 quid before christmas.

Since my X1900gt(even when overclocked to x1950 pro levels) is clearly not fast enough to run the Crysis demo at XGA resolutions I do need to get a new card in the next few weeks if I hope to play it this year!!

    A) it's a demo.. so take it with a pinch of salt.

    B) check out far cry - a X1950 based card beats a 8800GTS.. both games are branching shader heavy so might favour ATi's architecture.

I hope A) is correct and I hope the retail game runs BETTER than the demo. If not Crytek has shot themselves in the foot as many people will NOT spend 150 quid to play a game.

I would rather buy a DX10 in the new year when prices hopefully drop and any potential glitches have been sorted out.

i tkae it you have ATI

question is would you buy a card specifically for 1 game or would you go on the overall performance?

Re: HD3870 - interesting Crysis numbers!!

    I have both.

Also I think by mentioning the words 'both games' in there I show I'm not just talking about one game There are several games that are more limited by branching shader performance than texture manipulations. As far as games I own are concerned, it's split about 50:50 between ones that favour ATi and ones that favour nVidia. The more demanding of those games tend to be the ones that favour ATi, so I'm doing the right thing by using a higher performance ATi card for the top rig.

But no, I wouldn't go on overall performance, I would look at the kinds of games I was interested in playing and would buy the best card for the price at those kind of games.

Re: HD3870 - interesting Crysis numbers!!

I interested in running Crysis and possibly Alan Wake if it comes out in the first half of next year. Perhaps the next FEAR instalment too. I currently have and E4500 running at 2.9ghz and 4gb of RAM. I know it is nothing extra special but what do you think would be a good choice?!

I do not want to spend more than 140 quid or even less if possible. I foresee I would probably need to get a new card and CPU at the end of next years(funds permitting).

Re: HD3870 - interesting Crysis numbers!!

The HD8350Pro is looking very nice for the price of £115, but don't expect to be playing Crysis et all on max settings if you're not willing to fork out the dosh. The 8800Ultra struggles at decent settings, so you don't expect a sub £140 card to do the trick...

I want to play at 1280x800 and hopefully medium settings.

I am not such a demanding gamer primarily since I cannot afford too!!

Re: HD3870 - interesting Crysis numbers!!

I have to admit that I am glad I spent my hard earned on the 8800GT, it's good to see ATI coming close though from these early reviews and those of you who prefer ATI cards wont be so far behind and have the extra cash to spend on other bits. Nice to see it so close though, can only mean better products from both camps now.

There seems to be an 8800gt 256mb in the works. Scan seem to have in for preorder for around 120 quid. I wonder if the extra 40 quid is worth it for 256mb more RAM?

Definitely waiting for the HD3850 vs 8800gt 256mb reviews!!

Only reason I will buy this card it because I cannot have SLi, so I'll be getting Crossfire.

If I had SLi, I would get 2x8800GT, Period.

Some more interesting result for this card I think I might not bother with waiting for the 8800gt especially since my board is a CF one.
