Need a *cheap* and *temporary* solution for a GeForce 8800GT

With all the massive shortages and price gouging on the 8800GT cards, I'm looking for a cheap, temporary solution for my new rig until the stock problems are sorted out. I really just want soemthing that will run Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on max or near-max settings (hopefully with HDR to boot) until I can get my hands on a GT (or even one of the new GTSs, though that'd require a bit more saving).

Any ideas? I'll be running a 22" Widescreen LCD @ 1680x1050 resolution, 4 GBs of RAM, either a Q6600 or E6750 Core 2 Duo CPU, and Windows XP Pro & Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

I need ideas for a temporary card...or somewhere that has GT's in stock for $300 or less...

What's cheap for you? If it's £100ish then it's gotta be a HD3850. £107.70 in stock at Scan here

    If it's £70ish...then you're looking at a second hand 7900GT or 7900GTO, or a new X1950Pro

If it's less than £70...7600GT (but you won't be running on high with that).

Huh? Overclockers and Scan are showing stock on the 8800GT, so are many other vendors. Stock due in the next 3-5 days is also high. Can't see why you'd want to buy an 'interim' card now?..

Re: Need a *cheap* and *temporary* solution for a GeForce 8800GT

All depends on what you class as cheap.

I had a toss-up between 7300GT which is really cheap and 8600GT which is what I went for in the end. 7600GT seemed too expensive for something normally half the performance of my 8600GT (which I got from Amazon).

Of course if you really want high performance and native resolution, that rules out cheap entirely. You want at least a 3850 at which point you might as well just stump up the cash for a 8800GT else you stand to lose a lot of money selling on quite an expensive card.

I doubt the 7300GT would run Oblivion at even the lowest settings, and I can't imagine a 8600GT being much fun either.

I don't know just how bad the stock situation is State-side, but it seems a bit of a waste to buy a gaming card that you'll just replace when the 8800GT becomes realistic. I know you could Ebay it, but why not just buy a HD3870 and be done with it? It's not far off of the GTs gaming performance and it betters it in every other area. Or just be patient. Prices will likely drop when the 8800GT SSC comes out, though whether stock will be around by then, I've no idea.

Couldn't agree more. I was in the same position about 3 months ago when I rebuilt my rig. Like you, I ended up going for the 8600GT (a 512MB one.) It was pretty cheap and at 1024x768 I've be able to find smooth settings for all games, including Crysis and UT4. Still, it was bought as an 'interim' card until the 8800GT/GTS cards based on G92 came along, so I'll be upgrading in the next few weeks.

To the OP: ebuyer now has the 8800GT @ £142 + VAT. Product seems to be arriving at most places now. I'd still dump the idea of an interim card and just buy an 8800GT in the next couple of weeks. Still, that's me; you may feel different.

He said cheap, and whilst I agree he should just wait and get what he really wants the 8600GT gets more than half the performance of the 8800GTS and I bought my 8600GT for 47 quid (Amazon have put the price up I notice, that offer couldn't last long but at 57 it is still a good buy).

In the 2 tests I checked (the one you linked and the following one) it doesn't even get half at 1280x1024, let alone at the 1650x1050 I assume his 22" will be running at.

Re: Need a *cheap* and *temporary* solution for a GeForce 8800GT

Absolutely, no cheap card will run high resolution. Hence everyone seems to be saying to just wait.

But for cheap (and three words into the thread title the OP emphasised cheap), half the performance for a third of the cost is a good ratio. I guess the 256MB 8800GT will drop that to half the performance for half the cost, and that is OK too

Basically, in a shader heavy game like this the 8600GT gets you 7900GT performance. On that bench I linked to it beats the 7900GS at all resolutions. At the time Oblivion came out, 7900GT was a high end card so it damned well aught to be acceptable otherwise you couldn't run Oblivion on the best hardware available when it was released.

Re: Need a *cheap* and *temporary* solution for a GeForce 8800GT

I really appriciate everyone's imput. It would seem I was overly optimistic in wanting an Oblivion-happy card on the cheap.

Happily, this morning (about an hour ago, actually), I bought an eVGA 8800GT Superclocked on NewEgg for just under $300. When I looked a few minutes ago, they were still offering them, so anyone interested, GO GET 'EM!

On the note of the HD3870 cards, they seem to be in about as short supply as the 8800GT cards (Believe me, I looked!). The 7850s can still be found, however.

Looks like I posted this thread a bit premature (and was waaaay overly optimisitic by what I could find), but its all moot now, though. Maybe someone else can make use of it though (as I said, I found the GTs on NewEgg, and I saw Radeon 3850s scattered around here and there, including NewEgg).

Well you're sorted now, but for anyone else in the same situation a x1950pro can play oblivion at near max with HDR+AA at the same time.
