What is a good buy right now with a budget of 200quid?
To be teamed up with C2D @3g+ and on a 22" monitor.
I am thinking 8800GT
Thanks

Im thinking you arent.
I have just seen the EVGA 8800GT on Ebuyer and they are wanting £220 nearly for it.
With the imminent release (available next week by the looks of it) the GTS there is NO WAY the GT is worth £200+.
There are cheap versions for around £160-170 but for £200 you should definitely wait.
Also, the GTX prices are dropping a fair bit on most hardware sites now. I saw one yesterday for £239 and they are also fater than the GT.
Well, he did say, and I quote "What is a good buy right now with a budget of 200quid?"
and then you say:
Why? They're all reference cards. I don't understand why people fork out £220 when they can pay £160...
I still think the 8800GT will be excellent bang for buck when the new GTS comes out, if you are paying £160 for one.
Faster, but what about the OP's PSU.... it requires about twice the power.
I am building an mATX rig (will have 600w PSU tho) but power is important - as is right now; I need it in about a weeks time.
I have been offered a 2nd hand 8800GT XXX alpha dog or something that is only a few weeks old for 190 quid. Should I get this?
bleh if your going 2nd hand try ebay, i got a bfg oc2 for £188 inc postage. Sure its alot but its readily available as most retailers have it out of stock and usually charge more than that price.
its a new sealed one btw.
There is a seller offering XFX 8800GT 512MB cards for 150 to 160 quid delivered.Only thing he/she does not accept paypal.Feedback seems good and quite a few of these cards have been delivered.
Ive heard good things about the new ati cards. 3870 is supposed to be really really good. The only game to stress it is crysis
i work in the industry and managed to snag an Asus 8800GT at launch for myself, paid less than £150 .
current prices on 8800GT's are extortionate, they will drop by £20~£30 when stock lands.
the 3870 cards are good, but not as good as an 8800GT... any review will show u this...
But arent they cheaper than the nvidia cards?
I think at the moment, it depends on what you're willing to pay for your graphics card. If you can get an 8800GT for £170 or less, the boost in performance outweights the additional cost compared to a £140-£150 ATI HD3870. If you're paying out £200 for an 8800GT then there becomes a strong arguement for the ATI HD3870.
Personally I was gonna go with whichever was in stock at the time, as luck would have it, 'twas the 8800GT that I picked up at a convincing bargin price of ~£170.
If it's the 512MB version, you need the card NOW, and spending £190 isn't an issue - then yes. I'd be tempted to save some cash and get a 512MB HD3870 for around £160 though.
However, there's an awful lot to be said for waiting a few weeks - nVidia will have released the new GTS cards by then and stock levels / prices should have settled.
I agree with that yesWhy? They're all reference cards. I don't understand why people fork out £220 when they can pay £160...

What is complete lunacy though is paying £200 or so for one. They just arent that amazing for that sort of cash considering what is coming along next week and in January.
Also what confuses me is the waiting list/pre-orders on this card. Just go for the ATI card and sell it as soon as the next nVidia crop are here.
Bought an EVGA 8800GT off ebuyer yesterday with crysis for £185, stocks still a bit thin but they're slowly becoming available.
Is it also worth mentioning crossfire in the HD3870 favour
I add it simply because the p35 motherboards are rated so highly are crossfire (well the higher end ones)
And the 680i for SLi are very expensive compaired to them.
The big question would be is crossfire worth it?
