whats your power supply mog? open the case and check what wattage it is. is it a generic one or is it a good decent branded one? tell us the amps on the 12v rail. im assuming you upgraded from a 7300le from a retailer desktop from dell or some sort of company and they have given you a psu just enough to power that system. if so then you'll need to get a new psu for it to work.

    Re: 8800gt problem

yes it probably is. does the screen even turn on? usually if a screen doesnt turn on then the graphics card isnt getting enough power. you mentioned power connectors? the gt should have 1 pci-e 6 pin power slot like below

    PCI-E Power Slot
    __ _ _
    |_|_|_|
    |_|_|_|

    Molex Power Slot
    __ _ _ _
    |o o o o |

and your psu should have that connector plugged into the card. seeing as its a generic one I assume it doesnt have that and then you'd have to use an adapter that usually comes with the card. it's probably a 2 molex in 1 pci-e out Y-adapter. what you have to do if you have that adapter is plug in 2 free molex connectors and the adapter merges their power into that 6 pin pci-e connector which you then connect to your card. if you haven't done this then this could be the problem.

    Re: 8800gt problem

Not sure it is lack of power, the 8800gt gives off a hidious screeching sound from it's built in speaker if you forget to plug the power in. (at least the MSI one my friend did when we forgot)

If the original graphics is onboard (ie part of the motherboard not a seperate card) then it might just be a question of turning it off in the BIOS.

it could also be your motherboard not recogniseing it. (some chip sets cannot see the 8800gt because it's pci-e 2.0)

Checking on your motherboard/pc manufactors website would be a good idea as would sending there technical support an e-mail (responce time will veary depend on the manufactor)

Full specs of each part would be handy, make, model, anyother details/numbers.

    Re: 8800gt problem

if you are going to use high end stuff like a 8800GT then you should really invest in a quality PSU, and at least 500w. even a cheap 500w wont do because if its poorly built then theres a good chance you will get much lower than the 500w its listed at

a quality thermaltake or consair or enermax would be excellent

look at this: Tiered PSU Listings - Tom's Wiki

    Re: 8800gt problem

my apologies it was a 700w psu ive installed :@ also ive checked that the motherboard will take this card and it will, so ive narrowed it down to the settings in the bios but dont know how to change them , any hints?

    Re: 8800gt problem

Out of interest, how are you changing the BIOS settings if you're not getting a display?

Anyway, you shouldn't need to touch the BIOS for a video card install. Normall process is as follows

    1) Download latest drivers for card you've purchased, unzip to a folder
    2) Uninstall drivers for current card
    3) Set PC into a safe resolution (e.g. 800x600) and make sure that displays on your current monitor
    4) Shut down PC and remove old card
    5) Install new card making sure that you've got the card firmly seated (check the motherboard bracket fits in comfortably and that you can do the retention screw back up)
    6) Connect power lead (if required)* this one definately is in your case, though it should only be a single 6 pin lead on an 8800GT, only the GTX and old GTS had two connectors.
    7) Power back up
    8) Log onto Windows and let the Add Hardware Wizard look for drivers, when it fails (it frequently does), run the install routine for the drivers you've just downloaded.

I'd recomend you go through that step by step (if you haven't done so already). If after all that you don't have a working display, then it's usually either a) duff card or b) duff power supply or c) DuffMan, oooohh yeah!!

    Re: 8800gt problem

Depending on full spec's but a decent 400-450w PSU should be enough
If it's an onboard graphics card (ie built into the motherboard and not a seperate card) then it could be defaulting/set to the onboard video and would need to be turned off.
PS mog17 what are your full specs?

You missed a couple of bits Lucio.

    1) Download latest drivers for card you've purchased, unzip to a folder (if a .zip, nvidia and ATi supply .exe files so they shouldn't be .zip, also tend to be best to get them from nvidia or ati not card manufactor)
    2) Set PC into a safe resolution (e.g. 800x600) and make sure that displays on your current monitor (you generally don't need to do this but it's generally best to do it first if you do)
    3) Uninstall drivers for current card
    4) Shut down PC and remove old card
    5) Install new card making sure that you've got the card firmly seated (check the motherboard bracket fits in comfortably and that you can do the retention screw back up)
    6) Connect power lead (if required)* this one definately is in your case, though it should only be a single 6 pin lead on an 8800GT, only the GTX and old GTS had two connectors.
    7) Power back up
    8) Log onto Windows and do not let the Add Hardware Wizard look for drivers. Windows often squirrels away driver files (even after removeing/uninstalling hardware) and will try to use them the next time you pulg in a bit of hardware which can cause all sorts of problems.
When the hardware wizard comes up cancle it, this causes windows to use the default VGA drivers, then run the .exe driver install package you downloaded.
