Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
So we get a year of recycled R6xx parts, is that so bad?
In general probably not but seeing how AMD seems to be struggling in just about every other area atm...
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
Ug, I knew it was a bad idea to aquire ATi in the first place, both companies would have been way better off as a partnership and two independent entities. It was a bad move that hurt them both, and the market in general since they can't muster up any competition worth speaking of against both Intel and nVidia now.
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
For most people it will not make a huge difference as long as games next year will run OK on the HD38** and 8800GT series cards. I just see that the price of these cards or their updated equivalents will start dropping in price!! This should make DX10 gaming more accessible. Just look at the price of the 7900GT and X1950 series cards now as opposed to even 12 months ago!!
Since most gamers upgrade their graphics cards every year to 18 months I think in reality it will not make a massive difference. I think it is about time that pc games started getting more effiicient in what hardware they use instead of expecting the user to upgrade their card every 6 months!! Just look at people who spent decent money on their 320mb 8800GTS cards for instance!! I remember years ago when I had a 9500 pro that I got nearly two years gaming out of it at good settings. Those were the days!! :(
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
This wouldn\'t normally be bad, as ATi were never ones for 6 month cycles as nV sometimes were. Assuming an early 2009 release it\'s just going to be a couple of months longer than they usually are, and to be honest, it looks like the 3800s have a good bit of headroom left in them, core speed wise anyway, so I guess there\'ll be a good bump based on the RV670 at some point.
It\'s bad in this case as nV look to be releasing their successor to the 88xxs earlyish next year.
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
Well there is talk that ATi will release a hybrid Crossfire solution next year, combining an onboard graphics chip with one or more PCIe cards to gain a boost in performance.
Whilst not a major advancement for cutting edge enthusiasts, it could be a nicely priced performance boost for people going in at the mid-range,

I don't see hybrid Crossfire as taking off, and it's for sure pretty unrelated to R700. (R700 is a high end chip, hybrid is low end)
I don't see hybrid taking off because it won't offer much boost, CF is no where near transparent in drivers. Too few games work, too many work worse with CF enabled. (and the people buying low end boxes aren't saavy usually)

That's the main reason why it could do well. The average consumer doesn't know otherwise. They'll just think it would be like a dual-core graphics card. More is good and all that.
If it did work, technically or commercially, nV wouldn't have to wait long to release their own though. SKUs have released dual-GPU cards for both.

Heh- you have a point.
Remember working at the box shop 10 years ago, and Joe Middleclass telling me to write down the video card on the service ticket "because he paid $300 for that and wouldn't want his pc to come back without it". It was a Rage AIW that was basically worthless at the time because it was a year old and better cards had come out, but he didn't know and thought it was some sort of high end gaming card everyone would want to steal. LOL
(I didn't say to him "Dude- I have Voodoo2 SLi and your 10fps craptacular Rage is meaningless to me" BTW)
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
Hmmm hardly good for graphics card prices though is it? Nvidias new cards the 9800's or whatever they will be called, will cost a bomb as they will have no competition worth talking about.
This is a stupid decision by amd as it now just shows that there is only 1 high end graphics card provider and they are nvidia.
Amd's cpu's are going the same way. They have nothin to face intel worth talking about.

Stupid decision if they had the know-how or capability to rival nV in the short term, but you have to assume they don't have the resources or theory to develop a direct high-end rival. It would be madness for them to throw money and time at something that they feel couldn't compete, in a time when they need to be conservative, consolidate their very decent OEM position and regather.
I'd rather they sat down and went about designing an entirely new product than go about several series just evolving what they had.
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
I agree, they need to go lick their wounds a bit before they can push something huge out the door, trying to aggressively catch up with nV would end them.
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
Just means we face a year of high prices for high-end products. I guess we have just been a bit spoiled this year because everything was a bit cheaper in my opinion.
Re: No new ATi GPUs in 2008
You're right, 2007 has been an excellent year for bargain GPUs, both second hand and new. X800XTs going for £40 second hand, new X1900XTs under £100, HD3870s and 8800GTs either side of the middle £100s. All superb value and even the oldest of those still very respectable performers.

The main battleground for both company's ISN'T the top end, it's the mid range stuff, it's whatever you can convince Dell et al to sell as standard inside their PC's. That's why the hybrid Crossfire technology is a chance for a turning point for AMD, get that right and suddenly you can sell a £30-£50 upgrade card alongside a £300 system.
Some tests over at [H] Enthusiast - AMD's ATI Hybrid CrossFire Sneak Peek Exclusive show a 33-50% boost in games, which is pretty nice for such a small upgrade cost and an easy sell to Joe Public, or even IT managers looking for a bit extra power in their office system purchases.
