Which 8800 card???

Thanks in advance for any help here folks

I am looking at putting a new pc together in the very near future (as in hopefully just after the new year) and am slightly undecided about which gfx card to go for

For the time being I will be sticking with my 19" monitor and therefore will be using 1280x1024 for my gaming etc

Having read various threads and articles I still can't decide which of the following cards to pick

256mb 8800GT
512mb 8800GT
512mb 8800GTS

A lot of what I have read recommends the 256mb GT for my resolution but some people say that the 512mb GT does offer a bit of an improvement in certain games (eg crysis) and if games do become more intense in the near future then maybe the 512mb GT would be the better choice

But if I was to go for a 512mb card.... would the new GTS be worth the extra money over the GT.... or is the imrovement not worth the extra cash???

This time yesterday, I'd have said go for the 256MB 8800GT for £118, but today I'd recommend this 512MB 8800GT for £138. :D That is, if it's still in stock next week. If they're back to £150-170, then would probably be worth saving that money and getting the 256MB card.

The 512MB 8800GTS is £207 (as far as I can tell - Blitzen might have a cheaper price for them, but he doesn't want to share it with us) - certainly not worth the extra cash for 1280x1024 gaming. :)

Performance wise, the GTS is about 10-15% faster. On average, if you take the lowest point (cheapest 512MB GT and cheapest GTS), the gap is greater than 15%. So if you are looking at optimal bang for buck, then GT it is.

they are cheaper but lack the 512mb memory

The above GTS's are the old design,very different to the new 512mb version. The GT will out perform them.

To be honest, I wasn't considering it (mainly due to desk space lol) but if I did decide to upgrade in the near future would the 512mb GT be the best buy for now??

Gah those cards have now been increased in price! There was me thinking I could grab a good deal on a 8800GT ;) Think I'll wait for the 9's in March now :(.
