Thats it, I've had enough, the stock cooler on my 4850 has to go. Not only does it not cool the card all that well it's flaming noisey.
So am looking for something with a good balance between silence and good cooling.

I would have a look at the Akasa Vortexx Neo:

It keeps my overclocked HD4830 at decent temperatures. I cannot comment too much about noise as it is in a aluminium SFF case.
The fan does run at constant speed so I would use a fan controller to adjust the speed.

They both look pretty decent, although I do like the look of the Akasa. Leaves with me with a bit of money to get a fan controller and some new fans for my Antec 300, although I have been thinking about getting a new case too.
Another recommendation for the Vortexx Neo. Its very much in the spirit of the old Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer brought into modern times!
Great performance and Great Value. Although you may need a spare case fan motherboard header in rage, because mine would not work with the fan attached to the cards fan power source.
another vote for the votexx - cheap as chips nowadays too

I replaced the stock cooler on my old 4850 with the Neo and it was night and day better and almost inaudible in my system. The Neo also blows air out of the botton to cool the vrm's but a heatsink cant hurt as they do get hot.
Finally fitted it this morning, have to say am very impressed with it so far, not played any games yet, but that will be fixed with a bit of COD 4 I think
Did you fit a heatsink to the VRM? and how's it performng?

When I took the original cooler off there was already a heatsync on the VRM so felt there wasn't much need to muck about with fitting my own customer like I was going to. Performance wise, when idel I see 37 to 40 degrees, depending on how warm my room is, when gaming it never goes above 46 and thats with a modest overclock to the card on core and ram.
I have to say the best £11 I've spent so far this year
