get a 8800GT if you can, they match the GTS in some tests are are not far behind on most. Also the GT is cooler, single slot and quieter.

you can get a GTS for cheaper than some GTs right this moment of typing.
GTS is better with a dual slot HSF and is quieter since it has a much better fan, also slightly faster.
I've heard both, GT fan becomes annoyingly loud over 40%, the GTS fan is still very quiet at 40%.
XFX has been my choice for gfx, or should I defect? I hear good things about POV or PNY.
I have an Asus EN8800GT which is super quiet and I really mean that even at 100% it's only just possible to hear it, and it overclocks like a good un 14568 in 3DM 06
Ummm single slot yes, the other two? Not as far as I've heard. Also the GT is cooler, single slot and quieter.
The GTS is cooler and quieter due to the better heat sink and larger fan.
At the moement most of the cards out there are all just Stock/reference design so there's not much between them in the way of performance/quality (not inculdeing factory overclocks)
So you're down to warranty/after sale service.
Also should note what resolution you plan to play games at, if it's 1440x900 or 1280x1024 (most common 17"-19" resolutions) then you'll not see much of a differnce for the money.
(if you don't play games then don't bother upgradeing at all)
Ohh I'll be playing games, UT3 for one (incidentally why is it UT3 when its the 4th one?!)
Probably get a GTS. Now to wait for Scan to put it on their today only page, which should be soon!![]()
Both very capable cards.
At 1680x1050 you would be pressed to noticed a difference in most games but the GTS may start to creep ahead at 1920 x 1200 and above.
I went with the GTS because I thought the GT temps were high and a one slot cooling design was not enough for that card, bearing in mind I wanted to overclock too. At 40% the fan is inaudible and I have pushed the card to 750Mhz core and no need to set the fan manually (i.e above 40%) although prices were much closer when I bought mine. Now 512Mb GT can be had for @ £140.

I have to disagree, as I have a superclocked 8800GT that runs quite cool. The main thing is if your case ain't cool, neither will be your card.I turn my fan down to 40% while on my desktop or playing low-intensity games, and set it too 100% (honestly, it isn't that much louder, and even with all my case fans, my rig isn't that loud either). My temps idle at 40-45c and peak out at 65c or so. However, the room I keep my computer in stays around 67-72 F, so thats likely a big reason too. But seriously, the single-slot setup is quite adaquate if you have proper ambient and case cooling.
Or maybe I'm just lucky.

100% is what the fan is at during boot, sorry but that is just stupidly hair dryer loud LOL
I don't think so. Now, my system isn't exactly whisper-quiet, what with 5 case fans and my HSF, but it isn't exactly loud either (sounds kinda liek a quiet desk fan set on low to me), and the noise difference on my GT on 40% and 100% is just enough that I know I switched it. And with headphones on, I can't hear a thing.Seriously, when my old laptop's fan reved up to 100% to exhaust air, it was louder than my current rig.

If you feel that 100% fan speed on a stock 8800GT is at all "quiet", you may need your hearing checked.
Even at 100%, the heatsink is not that great at keeping things cool; not compared to most thrid party HSFs, or the cooler on the GTS anyway.
Still, the cards are fully stable at stock settings, even at 95C, so I guess it's "sufficent".
As for the 8800GTS 512 vs the GT. the GTs are generally a better deal, if you can find them close to MSRP. After my 8800GT died I was unable to get another one for anywhere near the cost of my original, so I decided to grab the least expensive 8800GTS 512 I could find.
The GTSes OC much better, as they have better binned cores and memory, a higher GPU voltage, and a better cooler.
