    8800 GT 512mb @ 2500 x 1600

    Hi,

I have ordered a new machine and it's coming with a 8800gt 512mb GPU. I need to purchase a new screen and was debating between 30" and 24". I do a bit of gaming Flight Sim X, Counter Strike Source and Battlefield 2142. How will the GPU handle these games at 2500 x 1600 if i go for the 30 inch?

Not sure how helpful it'll be, but here's hexus's figures for quake wars:
    HEXUS.net - Review :: AMD Radeon HD 3870: the new midrange DX10 king? : Page - 10/14

bottom of the screen is 2560 x 1600. Couldn't quickly find any numbers for the games you mentioned.

    Re: 8800 GT 512mb @ 2500 x 1600

.... and again, not the games you mentioned, but some figures for 2560 x 1600 which should give an idea of what to expect:

AnandTech: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT: The Only Card That Matters

someone else may be able to comment on how demanding your games are compared to others. I've only just upgraded my whole rig to include a 8800GT. Coming from a 6800, I've tended to only play older games....

    Re: 8800 GT 512mb @ 2500 x 1600

It may not be particularly helpful, but I've got one of the new 512Mb 8800GTS and a Dell 30" monitor running at 2560x1600 and I have no problem gaming at native resolution whatsover.

I think the 8800GTS is pretty close to a GT in terms of speed (think GT is about 15-20% slower at higher resolutions but not 100% sure) so I wouldn't have thought it would be a big problem. You may not be able to turn on a lot of eye candy (I just don't know) but there's always going to be a trade off running these screens.

Worst comes to worst, you're just going to have to bump the resolution down a few steps. I used to play TF2 on my 7600GS at 1280x960 (on my 30" monitor) and whilst it wasn't pretty, it was the best compromise available for me. Ideally I think the 512Mb GTS is meant to be better for high resolution gaming (i.e. 1920 and above) compared to the GT, but the GT is a great card. For me, the price difference was £20 so I opted for the GTS, it really depends on your requirements.

Just for your reference, those links comparing resolutions are dealing with the old GTS', the new version (512Mb G92) is a little faster than the GT. I'm playing TF2 and UT3 on full resolution with all the options turned up to high without any slow down (Q6600, 4Gb RAM, ASUS P5K btw).

Well it'll be backed up with 8 Xeon cores running at 2.8ghz and 2gb ram.

no amount of cores will help the graphics card if its limited to a 256-bit memory interface at that resolution. if the cores did some graphics work maybe. but we all know that no such thing exists for the mainstream yet.

I think you are going to struggle with this, even CS:S will get into the 20fps at that res on a 24 man server.

Well maybe i'll bring it down to 1900X1200?

Yup, all those cores won't make a difference, you need graphics processing power to play games. Is upgrading the graphics card an option or is the machine currently being built? Might be worth the extra £20-£50?

The 8800GTS is a double slot card though so may occupy a PCI/PCIE slot if you need it for something else. Is this is some kind of workstation for something?

Would this be a MacPro by any chance? I looked at them, but realised that for the same price I could have an uber-PC and an iMac. It would probably make sense to upgrade the RAM on that box, given the amount of processor in it.

Yeah that's right, it's the new Macpro.

Windows only picks up 3 gb ram through Bootcamp in XP. But soon i'll be running Vista, so that wont be an issue.

I have thought about buying a Macbook Pro and building an uber PC, but i really want the top Mac for my other tasks such as Video editing. It's just nice to have one machine that does most things.

I am stunned that Intel have not bought this company/product yet and replaced their wonky integrated graphics hardware with it:

Tadah! DX9 in software using your CPU cores.
