Samsung Pebble 2232BW vs HP w2207h

I'm currently looking at buying one of the above two monitors, has anyone had experience of either/both, and if so, which comes out best.

The conundrum is that I have £65 of Amazon vouchers to use, but both are only available there through other suppliers, so I would have to pay postage. The other issue is that the Samsung is £206 at Amazon, whereas it's £230-odd for the HP, plus I'd have to buy a DVI->HDMI adaptor/lead. Alternatively, I could get either for under £200 from another retailer and use the vouchers for something else.

On the other hand, if anyone knows another monitor that is better and cheaper than both, let me know...

I have been using the HP w2207h for about 3 weeks now and all I can say is that its probably one of the best TN tft's, colours are rich and vibrant, especially with the coated screen (beware though if using in an area that will have very bright direct light on the screen as it gets a little reflecty if thats even a word, lol )

It has an adjustable stand for height and tilt, the Pebble doesnt, also I thought that the Pebble looked and felt like cheap plastic that you'd find in a cheap toy! IMHO...(even the wife said it looked awful!)

Staples had the HP for £199 and they have a 14 day return policy if you dont like it (just dont damage it though!) and you'll get a full refund, you've got nothing to lose.

I'd keep the vouchers for something else on Amazon, no point in paying another £30 just because......

Also I am currently on VGA connection only as I've yet to get a DVI to HDMI cable (I saw a nice decent Belkin one on Amazon, dont wanna share your vouchers do you? )
and its quite an amazing display I must say, and I'm the sort to be very picky with that kinda thing, my last monitor was Dell Ultrasharp with DVI so I am giving you an honest answer.

Sorry for the rant, its late and I'm a little tired to say the least, but I hope this helps?

    Peace

Re: Samsung Pebble 2232BW vs HP w2207h

HP w2207h, for about 2/3months now, outstanding, crisp clear picture, text is very easy on the eyes, no ghosting, at the momment running 1x dvi>hdmi and the other is running as 2nd monitor on my media centre via vga, movies look great on vga. The stand is super strong, loads of movement options. The glossy finish looks great, but dust can be a problem, not found the right cloth yet, @D.M what are you using to clean/dust the monitor

    cheers

    @ Max Tractor,

I am using a Pentax microfibre cloth, they come in various colours, got mine originally from my local Tesco's superstore near the pharmacy area but I've just seen some also on the counter at my local Dolland & Atchinson opticians.

They can be used for camera lenses and glasses so they have to be non-damaging etc...also you can wash them and keep re-using them.

They only cost about £3-£4, wont use anything else.

What DVI-HDMI cable or adaptor are you using?

    Peace

I've had the w2207 (same as w2207h, with without HDMI) since it was released and it's been great for me. Only problem I had was with initial setup getting the colours, brightness and contrast right took some doing. Once set though it looks great

Can't comment on the Samsung though, guess you're pretty unlikely to find someone who has them both

OK, thanks for the input guys. I did have a look at Staples but they were quite dear. £194+VAT. I'm struggling to find the HP for under £200...

I think the only way to decide is to get drunk and make a snap decision then.

You could save some time and just flip a coin!

Have you tried the actual Staples shop rather than the net? I bought mine for £199 from their shop. Also they did offer me a 14 day return from another customer and they would knock 10% off the price.

Sometimes the net and shops arent always the same.

If Amazon is your last hope then it would be better to use them and the vouchers you have, then if you dont like it you can still return it within 7 days under the DSR, however you'll have to pay for it to be returned.

Hope you find what you want

Have you tried the HP site, got mine from there, they were doing a £40 off deal, not sure if it is still on

It's £239 on the HP site, no mention of the £40 off deal, but I might not have seen it.

Might try and see if there's a staples near me, thanks.

Re: Samsung Pebble 2232BW vs HP w2207h

There is a deal on HP store, i tried to buy there this week however something went wrong and ill have to wait until monday.

    Here is the deal:

Use the code: HPOPTF on your first buy from Hp store on any expense higher than 235 and they will give u a 40 quid discount. So, the monitor is now 239 - 40 = 199.

That's the best deal that I could find. I am thinking, after seeing this forum, to check my local Staples store if the price there is still 199... if it is it's better to pay there and pick up at the very same time, I hate to wait delivery anyway.

I think HP raised the suggested price or something, because on many forums I could find people saying that they got theirs for 189 or something during the christmas period and the beginning of the year.

If you have any idea of the actual price in stores please give me a hint before I spend my time going there.

    Cya mate.

Why not go for the SM226BW? It's £200 on amazon with free postage and even with an A or C-panel it's still a good monitor

Re: Samsung Pebble 2232BW vs HP w2207h

Ive got to be honest here, the HP looks 100% better than the Samsung.

The HP screen alone is sooo much better, sharper more vibrant colours, glossy coating makes it stand out (in a good way), the Samsungs look flat and dull in comparasion. (I have had both side by side )

Also the stand on the HP is alot better, it has height & angle adjustments, the Samsung only has angle.

1 possible downside for the HP is that it has VGA & HDMI connectors, so if you use DVI you'll need an adaptor or cable.

Do you want glossy colours, or something that is a bit more representative of the real world? Even if you do only a little photo editing the glaring colours of most screens are horrible for that.

It really depends on the user, i mean if you are a casual user that just wants the best screen for his/her money then the HP is a fantastic looking screen and imho it actually makes the photos much more enjoyable, however if you are someone that wants the best colour reproduction then I suspect that you'll not be buying a £200 screen and you may even want a calibrator too

The colours are not glaringly horrible like my old Kodak digital camera used to make, they were oversaturated and way off base, the HP just makes things look more vibrant and with deeper colours but still looking real. If anything to me the Samsungs look weak and washed out, even against a non-glossy TFT.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the glossy screen on the HP can be difficult to use if its in direct sunlight as it will show reflections more, so its best used away from a light source thats gonna go straight to the screen.
