A bit surprised at the overclocking capabilities of the 8500GT!!

I have one of these in a secondary computer. I can overclock the core and the shaders from the standard 459mhz and 918mhz to a massive 700mhz core and 1400mhz shader clock. I tried 750mhz core and 1500mhz shader clock but this lead to issues after around 10 minutes. Since it is only a DDR2 model I got the memory upto 1000mhz(from 800mhz). I get a 50% increase in 3Dmark06 scores and can play UT3 on maximum settings at 1024x768. Not bad for a card which cost me £25 on Ebay. Are the 8600GT and 8600GTS this overclockable too??

Also does anyone know how to increase the shader overclock range in Rivatuner. It maxes out at 1380mhz for me??!!

i'd give atitool a go, also has a handy artefact monitoring bit so you can instantly see when your o/c has gone too far

Re: A bit suprised at the overclocking capabilities of the 8500GT!!

I managed to get it up to 715mhz and play a bit on UT3 and it seemed Ok! I do use a Sytrin VF1 which helps keep temperatures down. I managed to get one for under 20 quid which was not bad!! ATITool does not seem to have shader overclcok functions like Rivatuner. I wonder if there are any other utilities which can enable shader overclocking??

Re: A bit suprised at the overclocking capabilities of the 8500GT!!

I think these budget cards are underrated.

My XpertVision 8600GT has been excellent value at 47 quid with DDR3 ram and a big heatsink/fan. Scan have started selling them here as Palit and though I suspect I could wind it up to GTS speeds I don't have any games modern enough to make it necessary

Re: A bit suprised at the overclocking capabilities of the 8500GT!!

I get 3284 in 3DMark06 at 1280x1024 with an E4300 running at 2.4ghz and 1gb of RAM. The SM2.0 score is 1287 and the HDR/SM3.0 score is 1182.The CPU score is 2061. The temperature does not exceed 55C to 60C in a warm room with the VF1 heatsink and fan. In a cold room it would be between 45C to 50C.

At 1024x768 the 3DMark06 score is 4214 with SM2.0 being 1636,SM3.0 being 1633 and the CPU score being 2049.

I will try to use FRAPS and look at the average framerates in the UT3 demo and some other demos.

I had a go on the UT3 demo and in both the Team Deathmatch arenas I got between 20-40 fps with the overclocked card. The game was on maximum quality settings at 1280x800 resolution.

Re: A bit suprised at the overclocking capabilities of the 8500GT!!

I seem to remember that the 8500gt and 8600gt also fair well in sli.
yes yes I know better to buy a single better card than two crappy ones, yes the end resaults still aren't great but it is a rough performance boost of around 70%
It's one of the oddities of SLi the lower down the series the greater the % boost sli gives.

PS what's the 3DMark06 at stock speeds?
