8800GT buzzing whining noise normal?

Hi guys

I bought a 512mb 8800gt and it arrived today, and i noticed that when you load a game up, it starts to make a whining / buzzing / squeeling noise which alters frequency when you look around in game, it also made the noise while testing 3dmark2003 (scored 34000 ), also it gets even louder at the menu screen in crysis.
The noise is not from the fan, i think it is a capacitor or a coil.
The noise is not that loud,
When idle in windows or any application there is no noise, only when in games.
my old x1950pro made no noise (just the fan noise)


Is this normal fellow 8800gt owners, should i ask for a replacement?

i don't have one of those cards but it can't be right for it to make that noise. Must be a faulty fan or something. RMA it I would.

if you load up ati tool and click the "show 3d view"
you can hear it clearly changing pitch

anyone with 8800gt can they check for me

im scared if i send it back they will say nothing is wrong and send it back to me

Mine doesn't do that, that I can hear. Maybe it's high-pitched enough for old-timers like me to be unable to hear it - are you in your teens or early twenties?

I have a very quiet (not silent) PC, and I've never noticed it, or heard this complaint from other 8800GT users (despite the links in this thread, but it's easy to find lots of examples of rare problems when you're looking for them on the Interweb ). Are you able to try your 8800GT in a friend's machine, or try a different PSU in your machine?

Now that I think about it... I always turn V-Sync on. Have you got an LCD monitor? Can you enable V-Sync in your games, and see if that helps?

Or from another thread: "A friend of mind had the same problem with his card(7800gs). After sending it back twice and trying 2 cards of mine he finally figured out it was his power supply. He had the power to his video card also suppling power to his case fans. Once he fed a direct line to his card , no more problems."

I never noticed this sort of sound with my 8800GT, even with the fan speed at 100% (its louder than it is at 30%, yeah, but it doesn't rattle or buzz...). Maybe the thumbscrew is loose? ^_^ If its seated properly (the card), I haven o idea what the problem is.

i think when you get over 30 your ears can longer hear high pitch noises (like that ringtone thats going around)

i dont think its my power supply as it works fine with my old x1950pro and its a decent new corsair one with enough power and i have the seperate cable thats meant for the graphics card connected .

it seems a lot of 8800gtx make this noise and that the problem is a loose coil i think

anyway i have requested a replacement and i am waiting for the email back
i dont want to spend 150 (which i have saved for ages) on somthing and not feal good about it

My 8800GTS (old 320MB) does it. It only happens to me when I have very high framerate, so mainly in menu screens.

Yep, it's a common problem. Just returned a card to Scan (BFG 512MB GTS) for a refund as it's too noisy in my HTPC. Like you say, it isn't the fan. Have a look at the Scan support forum here on Hexus, as quite a few posters on there are having the same problem.

Ultimately, it's your call as to whether you want to live with it. I chose a refund.

so did you get a different card with the refund or did you manage to get a 8800 series with no problems?
