I wonder if the HD4870 will give a HD3870X2 a run for its money??

    oh brother.. 16 ROPs again?

well at least the TMU have doubled..

The 480 shaders will fly on GPGPU... 2TFLOPS will go really really well on Folding..

I like those idle power consumptions. Still, I'll revisit in a few months (too early to get excited).

    Re: Radeon HD 4000 specs??

seems like a over powered HD3000 series.

i dont think its much of a reinvention of the architecture as proposed to a G80 to G92 bump up.

    Proposed? :|

Wasn't the G80 to G92 just a bump in speed (or more a reshuffle of speed) on a smaller process with a couple of little bolt-ons for media? Other than the smaller process bit, which ATi have already done too, isn't that just the same as this?

same here, could be nice. 16 rops shoudn't be much of an issue.

Extra TMU's and improved ROP algorithms as well.

haha yeah i didnt know what word to use.....

But you understood me right? it is more evolutionary then revolutionary, and with onyl a 256-bit interface for the 4000 series top cards, i dont see them besting the GT200s.

    Re: Radeon HD 4000 specs??

I dont think the GPU today will benefit that much with a wider bus.. we've seen the caveats of the 512bit ring bus.. boy it gives tremendous bandwidth, but the offset of the transistor needed to fill that memory void makes the core a complete let down..

Me thinks the 256bit bus is still the sweet spot for most cases unless needed to run 30'' panels or medical research monitor screens. There are still plenty that can be squeezed through that 256bit width. Considering also the GDDR5 will be supported, the speed bump should offset the width size and give those well wasted bus transistors a run for its money..

    Re: Radeon HD 4000 specs??

I'm getting a 3870 tomorrow and am going to sell and upgrade it to a 4870 when it gets released.

I always thought that a 512 bit memory bus would be uber fast, but the 2900 XT proved me wrong. Maybe they should move up to a 384 bit bus though like Nvidia have.

BTW Gflops on the 4870 should read 1008. They missed a 0 in case you're wondering

    BTW is 2200 GDDR5 = 4400 Mhz???

    Nice if it is.
