i would recommend the Asus Geforce 8800GT TOP 512MB its pre-overclocked and outperforms a stock 8800GTS which is really useful if you have a cheap budget.
Or... get more money and just get a GTS or GTX ;)
The best 8800gt is the cheapest generally assuming its got the reference cooler, also the 512mb is probably the one to get, 256 is a bit low and nothing needs 1GB. If your planing on spending more money you are better off moving up a product range to the GTS.
well i have the XXX Alpha Dog Edition by XFX and i get 6FPS more than my mate with a normal 8800GT on Call of Duty 3, so the gains aren't really worth it..
na overclocked graphcs cards in the whole are pretty much a waste of time, u get a few more FPS nothing worth jumping up and down about. Go for the GTS if you have the money
Best at what? To be honest, GT, overclocked GT, GTS are all within 'a few more FPS' give or take. The performance between the GT and GTS is about 10-15%. If a GT has both the core and memory overclocked by, say, 10% on average between the two (it's usually asymmetrical), then you can you can expect a boost of 5-10% give or take. I am reasonably confident that under most cirumstances, a person won't be able to tell in a blind test if a PC is running between a GT and OC GT, OC GT and GTS.. and chances are, a GT vs GTS except in the odd cases (i.e. the scenario calls for a 15% gap between the two cards, and the those 15% takes from 23fps, which is definitely not fluid to 26-27fps which is borderline fluid). Still, the cheapest GTS is cheaper than the most expensive GT I've seen, and under those circumstances, the GTS makes a lot more sense (it's not like you can't overclock the GTS with relatively minimal risk).
I would probably look at two things if I was to buy a GT today:
1. Relative costs/performance. Paying 20% more for an overclocked GT makes no sense to me, subject to 2. being equal.
2. Cooler, with more emphasis on low noise than great cooling performance. I am willing to pay a bit more for less/no noise even in terms of heat. But everyone is different when it comes to how much they are willing to pay for less noise (some may not even care but just want maximum cooling performance - yet others may actually want a single slot cooler - which is the reference design). I want a near silent system, so it's pretty narrowed down to the ECS N8800GT DMX and one of the Sparkle. I can't find the Sparkle, and the ECS, pre-equipped with Artic S1 is one that catches my eye the most.
Then again, some people may find support very important (for me, it's third in line - my experience is that GFX card lasts anyway as long as they were functional in the first place - other's may disagree). I could get a cheap Inno card and fit the S1, but I'll lose the warranty. A number of manufacturers have life-warranty (ECS for one does not - I think XFX tend to be the cheapest brand offering life-warranty though I've seen good deals of BFG too). eVGA step-up program may be worth looking at, especially with higher end 9-series probably not that far away from release anymore.
It's not easy to choose the graphics card because there're so many different brands of the GeForce 8800 GT out.
The 1024MB version doesn't seem to make much sense by the way, afaik.
As reviews are not really conclusive on this component, I made my mind up by visiting each and every companie's homepage.
Meaning: I've decided to choose the brand by the design of the website.
How easy was it to find my way through the menu ? Was it clear and intuitive ? ect

Just get the cheapest, they all come from the same place. If gauranteed clocks are what you're looking for, pay a premium for an overclocked card, if not find the cheapest one and overclock it yourself. There is no best really, they are all the same really.
I've got the Zotac 8800GT 660 core/1800 mem. I got it from Dabs and it cost the same or cheaper than a regular speed card. I got mine for £171 last year and it's now cheaper at £158!!!!!!!! :surprised: :surprised:
It runs perfectly though. It might have only a few extra frames but why not go for the higher spec if it's cheaper than normal.
