ATI 3450, 3650 or nVidia 8500GT for Vista

Hi, looking to order a new GPU for Vista Aero.

Currently have a nVidia 6600GT, which is running Vista Aero fine. A new PC needs a GPU and I am not sure what to get. Currently have a low budget of £50.00.

Absolutely no games will be played on the new PC.

Vista running on the 6600GT gives the score of "5.5 Desktop performance for Windows Aero". Will the ATI HD3450, HD3650 or nVidia 8600GT give better results?

I would prefer to get the ATI ones as they have better Video support for High Definition movies.

Please recommend me one and also if possible let me know what score you have with Vista.

    Thanks.

well my friend has the 8500GT and he only scores 4.8 on the Aero score i think, so you'd probably be better off sticking with the 6600

Thank you matty-hodgson for your input. One might think a 8500GT will give better performance than an older 6600GT, but this is not the case.

Re: ATI 3450, 3650 or nVidia 8500GT for Vista

If they arent playing games then the cheapest ATI 3450 would probably be fine. It should run aero comfortably and can also give enhanced video playback performance. Also some people think ATI cards give a slightly better picture (cant see that there is much difference personally). I wouldnt be too concerned about vista scores, they dont mean a great deal.

Re: ATI 3450, 3650 or nVidia 8500GT for Vista

Vista's rating system is flawed anyway so it's not something to think twice about.

Go for the HD3450, it'll take some of the strain away from your CPU when playing HD content.

Re: ATI 3450, 3650 or nVidia 8500GT for Vista

Thanks for all the inputs. I read in some forum that a score below 5.0 may indicate that Vista Aero is unable to run accelerated.

I would like Vista Aero to run smoothly without any slowdown.

If anyone owns any of these cards and runs Vista, please state your score.

    Thanks.

PS: The GPU will be going into a new PC with the following components.
    Intel E8400 3.0GHz
    Abit IP35 Pro
    2GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400 C4
    Corsair HX520

Im using a 7600GT, my Vista score is 5.7, and my Desktop performance for Aero is 5.9. I think 6600GT is not way behind 7600GT. You should be able to run Aero smoothly IMO.

I'm with others here go for the 3450 it will playback HD content with less strain on the CPU and will easily run Aero.

Unless you want to play High Definition content stick with the 6600gt - it will be fine for Vista! 5.9 is the maximum score for graphics so 5.5 is pretty good!

Thank you all for your inputs. I am now deciding if I should go for the ATI HD3650.

The extra head room on the HD3650 might come in handy.

well.. i own an 8800GT and a 8400GS, the 8400GS gives quite an awful score, and is VERY bad for playing games on..

6600GT is about half the performance of a 7600GT. 7600GT has 50% more pipelines, those pipes are more efficient and clocked higher.

The thing is 8600GT is faster than 7600GT (how much is very game dependent though), and 8500GT is half the performance of an 8600GT so 8500GT should be faster than a 6600GT as well as coming with twice the ram. Yet people praise the 6600GT and trash the 8500GT.

Very game dependant.. to the point where most games I play I always recommend a 7600GT over the 8600GT, especially 8600GTs with shedloads of slow ram.
