    Colours on sites

Just been looking at some hill-walking gear on various sites. Colours are given but seem to vary a bit between sites.
My main reason for wanting this is that I orderd 2 different garments from the same manufacturer; both were 'navy blue': 1 is that colour but the other is more sort of Oxford! (I actually like it, so not complaining).

Is there a site that will give colours and their names? (Being a man, I start to get a bit lost when straying from primary colours plus a couple more).
I found 1 site for web sites but nothing useful for clothing as the names aren't the same.

    HTML Color Names

    Thanks.

    Re: Colours on sites

Unfortunately while it's easy to specify a colour generated on a computer (RGB values or whatever) it's almost impossible to do for a dyeing process. I suppose you could use the Pantone system but that's designed for print really.

Compounding that is the fact that all the different chinese sweat shops which make all our clothes use whatever name they fancy (or whatever came on packet of dye) and then the designers/merchandisers working for the retailers might change the name to suit their range/sales pitch.

    In short, it's impossible.

    Re: Colours on sites

Pretty much every colour used in industry has a Pantone reference. Or is a shade of that colour.

These can be names or numbers.

Pantone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pantone - PANTONE Colors, products and guides for accurate color communication.

It could easily be that the two items are suppose to be different colours. Unless they are actually the same item in different shades, or it could be a manufacturing defect.

    Re: Colours on sites

the main problem is that many of the colour names used by the clothing manufactors are just made up because they sound more fancy.

older named colours generally got there name from specific recipes and amounts of pigment not the final colour persay

    Re: Colours on sites

    Thanks for the explanations.

It seems that the difference in colour is due to the different materials; one is smooth and the other is fleece so it has a much larger area. I've ordered a reversible shirt in navy blue and t'lass said that the sides differ as the shirt has smooth and fleece sides.
Looks as if the web site had navy rather than the actual apparent colour.
