It got an AGP or PCI-E motherboard?
And money may not be an issue but we still need to know how much you're willing to spend...

^^ :p ^^
Re: Just got a new computer..
Urm anything from up to 150. but the cheeper the better ya know :]
Re: Just got a new computer..
8800gt 512 mb
wether your psu is up to the task depends on the quality of that psu.
Re: Just got a new computer..
- 256MB HiS Radeon HD3850 ~ £97.51
- 450W Corsair VX ~ £44.05
Out of interest, how did you manage to get a new PC with a Pentium 4 in it?
Re: Just got a new computer..
I'm ok at changed GFX card's and Ram ect but the PSU seem's a bit tricky
is there anything that can cope with a 300watt/ish PSU, would the 8600GT be ok?
and surely the 8800GT has no chance, everything would blow up :P
Re: Just got a new computer..
Personally there's no way I'd risk it, any money you spend without upgrading the PSU is potentially money up in flames. It's not about the wattage it's about the quality, what brand is the PSU you have?
Re: Just got a new computer..
Im not sure...
The computer is a Gateway 510GB.. just went on the support site and it came up with this... 100929 - 300 Watt Bestec Power Supply and also it say's the spec is 512RAM but i took a 1GB stick outa my old computer and baught another 512 just for better gaming gameplay.. then realised it had a rubbish intell chipset thingy...
Re: Just got a new computer..
Yeah it's a cheap-o-nasty one I'm afraid. Don't be worried about fitting a PSU though, it's pretty straight-forward. :)
Re: Just got a new computer..
With the spec i've got if i baught a 600Watt PSU would there be a point in getting something more powerfull lets say a 8800GT or wait for the 9800GT or is the GTX cant remember but whats the best plan to do, game and cost effecttive.
Re: Just got a new computer..
To be honest... no. Aside from the P4 being a bottleneck for the cards you mentioned, the HD3850 is more than enough for a 1280x1024 resolution.
And as I said before, wattage isn't the priority. That 450W Corsair PSU would easily power an 8800GT, while a cheap 600W would crumble.

I take it you're on XP and not vista?
another option would be high end DX9 series (not quite as fast but enough for that res)
PowerColor X1950Pro AC2 512MB DDR3 £81.98
You really will not need anything over 400w for that
OCZ StealthXStream 600W PSU - SLI Ready £44.97
Ok that's 600w (major overkill) and the stealth is not the best model from OCZ, all OCZ PSUs are made buy FSP who are a good company, but it'll be ok, run your system np and on cheap atm. (nothing on ebuyer.com below Scan's price on the Corsair VX450w is as good as the VX450w)
Maybe the Antec EarthWatts 430W (also made by Seasonic like the corsair VX450w is) but at £42.60 might as well spend the little extra on the Corsair
If you don't mind buying from two places, then the corsair VX450w from Scan and the x1950pro from ebuyer ;)
ebuyer does have a Nvidia GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3 for £70 if you're on a tight budget, still less performance than the 3850 but again an OK card and should out perform a 8600gt which will cost you around the same.
Scan have a cheap 512MB Palit 9600GT for £103 might be worth it. :undecided:
EDIT: PS basically, hyper threading is used on the old p4 chips as a way of turning a single core into two virtual cores.
PPS did they give you a processor number? all intel chips have a model number, I ask because some of these chips are often misslabled by companies.
EDIT2: Just found that 510gb desktop on gateway's web site, they list differnt specs from you
p4 (model 541) 3.2ghz (yep actual p4 not something else mislabled)
And a 300w Bestec (effecenty 68% and single +12v rail, Max Current: 15 A = replace that before putting in any half decent graphics card)
At least it's a full sized ATX PSU and not a smaller one so you should have no problems replaceing it with any of the ones we've listed :) main problem will be where to tuck all the extra wires away.
Some companies use shorter PSUs or micro PSUs in there MircoATX cases, luckly that gateway is not one of them ;)
Get a decent PSU and graphics card in there
COD2, CS:S, BF2 = not a problem
COD4 and BioShock = might struggle slightly esp when it gets bussy but nothing unplayable
Just forget about crysis ;)

Just for reference, here's a comparison between the X1950Pro and a HD3850 in BF2142:
