9800 GTX benchmark

The new 9800 are out tomorrow, and i stumbled on this link to a benchmark!

EDIT: As i dont yet have 5 posts, i cannot post links...

So search google for 'GeForce 9800 GTX benchmarked vr-zone' and it should be the first hit.

Doesn't look too impressive, but its progress!

*Checks it out* - Rumours from months ago suggested that it's about 30% faster than the Ultra. Time to see if it's true.

Edit: Will have to wait for a proper review - with comparisons with other cards.

It does point out that the 9000ers are still G92s. Don't expect too much of a blow in performance, if you ask me.

Pretty good overclocking though, I've been waiting for this card to upgrade to. Guess price will be the deciding factor.

How do they know that's the GTX and not the GTS or GT?

em this is not the proper 9800GTX as far as im aware, its the x2 based one? where its 2 gt's slapped together, or am i wrong? the 1.3x faster is for the dual gpu. This is pathetic, they scored only 13k on 3dmark? i scored 14k when mine was overclocked to 3.6ghz and my gts too like 760/1060

Take a look at the article - it doesn't look anything like the x2 one It's a single PCB with a single G92 based chip.

If you look at where the main market is, it's a tremendous step up in performance - the 9600GT is significantly faster than the 8600GT for instance.

The minority AAA gamer market were somewhat spoiled with a fantastic 8800* part so there isn't that much room for the refresh part to improve things... that said maybe they have found something and these guessmarks are not representative.

The whole g92 thing is odd though.. logic dictates they should have not released a g92 8800* part and just saved it for the 9 series. I would guess that they ran out of stocks of the 8800* parts due to their dominance and/or the manufacturing costs would hurt margins in competing for the higher-mainstream market which ATI had won, so they brought forward some g92 production to tide them over.

the 9600 is basicly a 8800GT in the view of performance for price, its cheaper but performs less but with the difference it does make it very good for either way, 8800GT or 9600GT. The 9600 is also £110~ and a 8600 is like £50.

I still think nvidia lied, they said 2x the performance of a 8800GT and the other models etc, i see less xD.

edit: i also think amd have a great chance now if these cards are indeed a major flop. The 4000series should kick nvidia where it hurts.

actually this is rather simular to the 6800gt vs 7600gt which performed around the same, 8800gt vs 9600gt that is, although the 8800gt is an oddity in it's self when you consider it beats the original 8800gts.
so if you compair the 9600gt to the 8800gts (original) and that to the 7800gt then yes they are following a trend, doubleing the power with each new card series.

Now here is the biggy, if these new 9x00's are based on the g92 cores this raises the question did nvidia release the g92 eairly and call it 8800gt because of this eairly release (probably because of pressure from the new hd3xxx series from ati)
that would explane the jump in performance seen on the 8800gt and all the stuff we've seen about the 9series seems to be based on the g92 core

I see what you're saying - and yes, it's a refresh rather than something more radical - but I do wonder if ATI were leading the game whether a simple refresh would of been what we got. As far as i'm concerned i'll be waiting for the next series if the gains aren't significant and my current card doesn't start feeling slow in games. Even crysis runs very nicely for me right now and i'm fussy about smooth framerates.

Then again, if a 9 series GTX pulls a 50% gain.. Still, the hassle of new waterblocks and installing the darn thing.. hmm.
