    Play.com 8800GT?

    Play Value Geforce 8800GT / 512MB / PCI Express 2.0 / Graphics Card

does anyone know anything of this card, does it have the reference cooler?
or does it have 1 of the coolers that are stuck at 100%?

i really don't want 1 of them seeing as they're about 80dB in volume..

    thanks for any help

linky man, uncheck Automatically parse links in text
Automatically retrieve titles from external links

buttons at the bottom of "go advanced" if needs be easiest way

play.com certainly dont manufacture a 8800gt so hunting down what it actually is should be easy

don't know... the picture isn't so clear... why not send em an email and ask for more details of the spec? IMO that'd be the easiest thing to do...

    Re: Play.com 8800GT?

Umm I don't know of any 8800gt with fans stuck at 100%, the eairly ones were stuck at 24% if I remember correctly, which lead them to getting rather hot.

the big question is if it a stock cooler (probably is) then is it the older smaller fan or the newer larger fan?

    Re: Play.com 8800GT?

Thta's strange as the tweaktown review of that (which is the first resault thrown up by google) makes no mention of the fan being stuck at 100% in fact they list differnt sound levels for load and idle
    Link
And it's shown to be quieter than the old small fan stock cooler.

Must admit to never being quite sure on the Palit cooling, the fins on there coolers always seem to be a bit thick and few in number.

On a side note Ebuyer.com have a Inno3D 8800GT 512MB with Wind Edition cooler for the same price.
Inno3D 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 Wind Edition Cooler Dual DVI TV Out PCI-E Graphics Card - Ebuyer
Although I've no idea what that's like, I had a look for it the otherday on the inno3d web site and it's not listed and there's no search function to try to look up the refernce number ether.
I'm not sure which is more annoying, manufactors not haveing search functions or as is often common very very bad ones.

    Re: Play.com 8800GT?

    the card he had..
it had 3 wires going to the fan, the heatsink was a gold/coppery colour and it didn't have that smaller heatsink at the end of the card :S

    maybe they've upgraded the card.

and tbh.. i prefer the look of the reference cooler, and mine runes very quiet and quite cool..
so long as i bump up the fan speed before gaming, but i just bump up the volume aswell

The artical was from 14th December 2007
All the pic's of that card I can find show the blue cooler on both sonic and standard versions, or the old standard version with the refernce cooler.
You might be mixed up with the 8600gts Super (or 8600gt sonic) which was gold coloured
    Palit Microsystems, (HK) Ltd

If the image on the play website is anything to go by . . . then it's a Nvidia unrebranded card with the small fan cooler (original refernce cooler)
    Your best options are:
    - At that price go for it and hope, then if it's a bad cooler get an aftermarket one to replace it
    - Wait untill monday so your can contact Play.com and hope it's not sold out.
    - pay more for a card you're sure on.

Must admit to being tempted by that one, esp as EVGA have released a 8800gt with dual slot cooler (looks like a gts one) and are also releaseing the cooler seperately (it's suposed to fit on any 8800gt refernece design card)

noo.. it was definately an 8800GT
i remember the box was green, like really shiny.. and had a frog on the front.
he got it from here i think, nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB PCI-E - Aria Technology
    definately had a gold heatsink.
