Fantastic news for ATI! Considering you can get the X2 512Mb for £150 and the 1Gb for £250...Nvidia is going to have to price this competitively for it to be any use. The 50W saving during load is nice though.
512Mb version here SAPPHIRE HD 3870 X2 512MB GDDR4 ... | D.A. Computers Online (and numerous other places for around the same price)
1Gb version at Ebuyer
I didn't think there were 2 different versions
If that's actually a proper 1GB X2 which I understand to be the only X2 i'm going to get that beast from rugby asap!!
GX2 looks really dissapointing.. It must be a driver issue.. surely. If not then it's really not very good especially as they will no doubt charge silly money for it.
Temps and noise are good but not good enough to make it worthy.
What is with the introduction? Card at doorstep with letter saying enjoy the card? :S

In the AA and AF tests, X2 is better, but the 88GT was pretty close in gaming benchmarks...without AA and AF...yes, GX2 is a disappointment...

Surely you can see this benchmark was designed for ATI fanboys?
That must be opne of the WORST benchmarks i have ever seen.
Half Life 2 - Not a system hog
Unreal Tournament 3 - Doesnt require a monster PC for max settings anyway.
ET: Quakewars - Not a system hog anyway.
Also, the put up the 8800GT against these cards to make the higher resolutions look bad.
If you put a 8800GTS G92 and/or a 8800GTX into the mix, the ATI card and the new nVidia wouldnt look that great. In fact, the ATI card especially would look alot more deficient.
This is a benchmark that blatant tries to make the ATI card look good against the nVidia's.
Nothing more!
If that was the case they'd have just left the XP results out.
Personally I just think the drivers aren't there yet. SLI's not that bad. Between it and the X2 it's a no brainer for most (assuming the GX2 price is around or above £350), and while the X2 is better product technically in my opinion, the GX2 will end up faster, if you can see what I mean.
Nice to see a benchmark suite that doesn't rely solely on TWIMTBP games, no matter how good or bad the choices are overall.
nice how they didnt test crysis on high.....
Well this just makes the card seem like a major flop imo. But i was expecting it, they said 1.3x better then an 8800GT or GTX cant remember, and that just shows it. Still, will be expensive and no doubt ati will price cut their X2's which is great as you get a better card(so it seems atm) which takes slightly more energy at load and is about 5C hotter, but performs better for less
Well I'm pleased anyhow. I was going to buy a 3870x2 anyhow, but this just proves that I wasn't just about to make a mistake.
Hasn't proved much until Forceware improves really.. but it is rather dissappointing.. There are bits which can be improved by quite abit..
If they can reach the magical 2x scaling like the 9600GT then they'll be laughing..
But what I still cannot get is why can't SLI give synergistic effects.. I feel this is quite silly as most processes can be split dynamically (things that needed to be split and not just sharing the same sort of work) and achieve synergy i.e. breaking the magical 2x scaling in performance.. Certainly as well, which game publisher would want to overhaul their programming methods to fit synergy..
Nvm.. its still a chicken and egg thing eventually..
Me want Ultrabook
They said at the start that they would only test (or post) playable settings, and while you could play Crysis at a decent resolution you'd be missing rather a lot of action... it just doesn't scale at all well in multi-GPU set ups.
More at load, but then for 95% of people, it'll save more power overall being less when idling. If you don't save more, then you need to get out more.![]()
Surprisingly disappointing - it just doesn't seem to scale as well as SLI. AMD were able to get their X2 to scale pretty much on par as Crossfire, but this seems pretty off. Let's see if any reviewers will test the card against a 8800GT SLI setup to see if their implementation of the X2 introduce a significant overhead. If this is really representative of the final product (I'd like to think that it's also a driver issue - otherwise the envelop hasn't been pushed much in since the 8800GTX), I can start to understand why nVidia decided to release some really good mid-upper mid end products first. It also makes me wonder where the 9800GTX will stand.
ehm... the card is a flop. i'll wait to see what happens in a few weeks, but in terms of pricing and performance, that card is utter rubbish.
also consider that nVidia aren't so great in the drivers department...
give me an X2![]()

A fair warning about tweaktowns "early" 9800GX2 review. - Rage3D Discussion Area
have, and still am holding to my current conclusion... if they can't boost the drivers / performance within say a month, then it won't be worth it...
